strange block play

my friends back home, who have played since early nineties has a house rule.

they match up all players in pairs, that 'hold' each other. In theroy, whole team could be inwolved i a single block.

like this

Code: Select all

12 3
abcd
where 2 blocks b.
as the rules say, no player assist, becouse the all have tackle zones.
The way they play is: 1 holds a 3 holds d and therefor c could assist.

now over to my problem!
I wanna start a real league with the real rules, but they regret a single change in this. The argument are like: "so if 3 is a goblin, he could stop 2 ogres (c and d) from assisting? thats not realistic"

How could i make them change? I've run out of argument..
I've taken up changes in the game (it'll often be a big los scrabbage), the ogres action is not to stop a goblin from assisting, but the actual action they take out, and a few more...

thanx

cause the Ogres are distracted by the goblin and don't think of assisting their mate.

He might not be able to physically hold them off, but he can keep them occupied. Because he's tickling them, for example, but also just by threatening to dodge through their legs..

Could be for any reason. He could have just called the Ogres' mothers something despicable. BB players are meant to represent living creatures, not mathematical objects like chess pieces. :)

Tell them to stop complaining, use a strong team and take guard, that way they can assist whenever they like.

the problem is not that i wanna play and win in the league, it is to convince them to run regular block rules.
It'll be really tough for me playing in 2 different leagues with different main rules.

Good luck Tobbe, converting a "that's not realistic" crowd to follow the rules is quite hard. I remember when I tried that, it didn't work until they realised that the game is supposed to be played according to the rules...

However one good "realistic" arguement is to explain that a player assisting another player is taking a rather active part in the blocking (ie locking arms behind the opponents back, kick him or bite him etc). Even a goblin would be able to sneak up behind and ogre and place a wellplaced fist on some vulnerable spot on the ogre if he stops paying attention to the goblin.

He's only stopping one ogre from assisting. I don't think d has that chance.

In most instances of these "unrealistic" problems, such as one goblin keeping even one ogre from assisting, the ogre should realistically have to actually use his extra strength for it to count against the assist. What I mean is that the ogre should block the goblin. Then he can assist all he wants afterwards.

I've found that local leagues use rules they like. If it works for them, let them play. Adapt to their rules, who knows you might even like it in the long run...gives more options.

Playing bloodbowl is more important than arguing over silly rules.
