Non-random MVP

For a league I'm going to be helping to start up, I've considered the following replacement for the random MVP method:

After each game, choose four of your players and present them to your opponent, who then chooses which of them he feels was your Most Valuable Player. Both players do this to determine the MVP for their team.

Sound reasonable? It gives you some control and prevents stupid MVPs from occuring ("And the Ork MVP award goes to Sludge Noogin, the lineman who spent the entire game in the reserves box!") but still doesn't give you an outright pick.

I'm considering making it 5 players rather than 4.

You could add that:

if the other coach feels that the other didn't choose his players fairly (i.e. he's trying to make you pick some certain player to get that SP roll), you can select a random player instead.

Whatever the selection method is, you just have to be able to control the coaches that they play it fairly. Perhaps the other could report to the commissioner, or something like that.

In my three-friends-16-teams-league-side-project we have no problems in the system where the opposing coach nominates the MVP, because we all good friends and we play for fun. A single powergamer would ruin the system.

I have thought about making mvp's more logical but, if you start assigning players to get it, then the real problem is some players will get all the mvp's, leaving the whole other team behind in spp's.

I see the random MVP at the end of the game as a way to get the lineman some spp's which they otherwise might not get.

Totally agree with grotemuis. I think the only need is to change the name of this award not consider it mvp, but something like he learned some tricks by lookingat others players on the field. Just give it a name like "watching improvement" (not sure how you will call that in english).

Hi all,
actually - this season we've decided that the winner of the match gets to decide which one of his players gets the MVP.

It gives coaches something extra to play for, even when a match is "unimportant".

So far, this has been very well recied.

Ouch. I can already see that Witch Elf accumulating 7 MVP's out of eight.

Nice one. More like experience SPP,s instead of MVP. Perhaps thats what were after a re-name to differentiate.

Why not just have an experience roll -

On 5+ (D6) the player gains 1 SPP or you could say 6 on a D6 for 2 SPPs. Roll for every player in the team

You don't get the sudden jump that an MVP gives, but it ensures that SPPs are spread around and you aren't choosing a player for the reward either.

However I don't believe the current MVP system is broken, and doesn't really need replacing.

"Roll 1 die and if the result is higher than the number of SPPs the player has already, they gain 1 SPP"

This will get any player to the cusp of one skill but to get the skill they'll have to actually do something.

Should prevent odd mismatches of SPPs and get new teams into the swing of things.

About choosing the MVP:

Perhaps. But so far it hasn't proven to be a problem.
More like a tactic.
Another tactic is to give the 7 MVPs to 7 lineman with 1 pass each, for a total of 7 skills.

What is best?
You make the call :)

Yeah...

And IMO being able to do either is wrong...

The MVP should remain random.

This is also my opinion! We have recalled "MVP" into "MIP" = Most Improved Player. So it makes more sense!

We keep the random roll, but sometimes when a friend is over and he watches the game we let him choose the MVP. That way it's a third, uninvolved party who chooses. We haven't done it often, but it is fun when the "crowd" can choose who was the most entertaining player.
