Benching

Post by Darkson »

This is all being thought out as I type it, so there's probably some big gapping flaw in it somewhere.

In the pre-game (once your opponent is known in Open/challenge leagues but) before working out inducements, a coach may decide to "bench" a player. This player's TV is not used when calculating inducements, but is used when calculating SE.

However, benching players can make players upset, especially if they're the ones that find themselves on the bench. These players cannot earn the MVP.

In the post-game (between step 4 and 5) roll a dice for each player on the team (players that played -1 from the roll). If the dice roll is equal or less than the number of skills a player has earnt, then they threaten to retire, as per the concession rules.

Flaming/posts of "you missed this obvious flaw" away...

Ok my only concern is that it allows a player with 12/13 players who would have been giving away much inducement against a newer team to squeeze away from the chainsaw or big bad star player while still keeping the edge.

In other words it gives you control over your TV if you bench your one skill Lino (risk is low). Right now you'd have to stomach the inducement or fire someone which would cost you money. Some teams do sometimes fire poorly skilled player (skink) or unskilled player to avoid seeing a stab/saw player and you're making this easier for them. Basically they may reduce their v and retain the player.

I thought that was the point of this house rule, Greyhound.

I just have to ask, what are the concession rules?

I have the same concerns as greyhound. It would be a nice rule for my dark elves, that way I can just bench the assassin (who doesn't skill up that quick anyways) against high av teams and play a leaner team.

So that would probably benefit some teams a lot more than others...

Two ad hoc players which you will loose one every 6 games with this rule if you don't skill up. A risk I'd take on the dwarf who can hoard the cash.

I think spiralling expense must take the full TV of the team however to prevent rich players to become even richer.

My only concern is that the winners would be the better teams. Elves, for instance, could roster 15 guys, then just bench two if they don't have any SIs.

Any benched player that fails the roll (should have said the rule of 1 is in effect, so benched rookies may leave) rolls a d6, and leaves the team on a 1-3, same as a player with 51SPP could after a concession.

I don't understand your statement that a 51 spp player normally leaves the team on a 1-3 after a concession. I can't find anything in the rules about it and searching the forum didn't make me any wiser.

Disregarding that, I think that you should only need to roll for the players that you benched for the match but if you fail that they will leave the team immediately, without a second roll.

i think it unduly harms goblins (the way i play them) and halflings, who operate and lower TVs on purpose, and need those inducements to survive/succeed.

I know that if someone were to cut a player and i lost my bribes, my team would be in real trouble.

P.29 of the CRaP (p.29 as written on the pdf, not p.29 of the pdf itself), under Conceding, bottom of right-hand column.

We use a benching rule in our league and it works really well. We dont have the concession rule so their are no negatives to benching (other than not having the player). We've found it allows rookie teams to get going in the league a bit easier and gets rid of lots of inducements in a game, which our league has agreed start to spoil the game over a certain point (about 300k).

Ditto, if I lost my inducments my halflings would fall apart. A nurgle team could drop a warrior and still be a threat but I would lose my master chef, one of my few tricks.
