Team Captain

Post by Beaux1980 »

Our league has always had a Team Captain Rule that works well for us.

When a team is made, You nominate any one of the players on the team as a captain. That player gets one skill immediately from their normal progression and 20k added to their TV. They also get 20k in bounties added to them immediately. They still get their second skill at 6 SPP. The only way to change the captain on your team is 1. They get killed. 2. You retire that player.

Once a captain has been killed or retired, you can choose anyone of your other players to be captain, but that too is permanent until the player is removed from the team.

This works very well for us, and doesn't seem to favor any team over the others.

I like it. I could also see it working for the player with the most SPPs, or MVPs being your captain too.
I've done something similar before with the captain having the Leader skill for free.

Couldn't you just slap leader on a player at start making for an effective 20k re-roll?

Or put it on a wardancer(already a prime target) so they have something like sure hands and make a broken player.

What about stuntys? If you put that on a goblin you might as well hand your opponent 20k
Or halflings putting block on a treeman makes a monster of the bat.

I don't like it.

I like the idea of House Ruling a team captain with some sort of skill, although you'd have to limit who could get it (no Big Guys, secret weapons etc) if you choose your own skill. At least it's a normal skill, rather than a skill roll itself.

Sticking Leader on a player for free (effectively) at the start would be the simplest mechanic. Who doesn't need more re-rolls (edit: except my Halflings, who can max out at 8 with a lucky Master Chef roll)?

Giving them Leader seems a bit good for some teams, as does choosing a player and giving him a skill for free.

Why not give the captain pro? Or you only get 1 captain a season so if he dies he can't be replaced till the next season.

It doesn't really seem to be Over Powered. We have done it for 5 seasons and after a couple of seasons, we made sure it was a standard skill, not a roll. Rolls were too powerful.

As far as a Wardancer with Sure Hands in the beginning, that is fine, that is not OP, because the Human team captain can just as easily have tackle, and put the WD in his place.

I do like the idea of Pro for the leader's skill though.

Just, as a commissioner for 7 seasons total now, we have had good success with this, and I am just sharing it with you.

I like this. Adds character to teams, especially if it sounds like you can get money from killing a certain player in your league. Sure, some teams benefit more than others, I'm thinking of teams with slow to skill players, but it's probably not a big difference.

I imagine Leader would be more unbalanced than a normal skill or Pro. Some teams get P access normally and others have to do without. Obviously teams with 70k rerolls would benefit more too.

We actually combine those things in our league. Every starting team gets to pick a Team Captain who starts with 6 SPP and one skill from his normal list increasing his cost by 20k. In addition to that, he also gets the Leader skill for free and that skill cannot be taken by any other means.

We started to use that rule back in 2006 and so far everyone seems to like it. It makes the Captain an obvious target of course, but most coaches put it on their sturdiest players, so it's not that much of a problem.
