Which players are the best in their position??

In my opinion these are the best 'regular' players in BloodBowl:
Lineman: Orc (AV 9 makes him go a long way)
Thrower: Dark Elf / Phoenix Warrior (AG4 and AV8, good combo)
Catcher: Lion Warrior (AG4, ST3 and MA8 and access to agility skills)
Blitzer: Wardancer(Block, Dodge, AG4: this is a real pain in the butt)
Blocker: Bull Centaur (fast, strong and hard to kill)
Anyone think otherwise?

Hum... I think a very good lineman is the dark elf/high elf one... AG 4, AV 8, better IMO than the orc... Especially when your team has played some matches (and the SPP come
)

The bull centaur is not a blocker, he's a blitzer. That said, here's my list:
Lineman: dwarf longbeard
Thrower: phoenix warrior
Catcher: wood elf catcher or gutter runner if +1MA, lion warrior otherwise
Blitzer: wardancer, followed closely by bull centaur
Blocker: ogre if big guys included, chaos warrior otherwise

Norse Blitzer with +1 ST, Dodge , Piling on and..........etc
But if you mean starting players I go for Skaven Gutter Runner or Skink. Never could get my hands on either - Grrrrr!

Yeah Zombie has it with the dwarf longbeard. The longbeard has a defensive skill that keeps him on his feet and an offensive to knock down pesky ball carriers. The only rival I think is the Norse lineman.

Lineman - definately Dwarf Longbeard
Thrower - Dark Elf
Catcher - Skaven Gutter runner
Blitzer - Wardancer
Blocker - Rat Ogre

The rat ogre is not a blitzer either, and neither is the minotaur. With wild animal, they have to be used as blitzers. Also, with MA6 and AG3, you really can't consider the rat ogre a blocker.
The high elf thrower is just as good as the dark elf thrower and costs 10k less, so you have to consider him better.

Let's look at this from an NFL perspective so we get some variety. I'm only going to use each player type once:
Offense
Quarterback: Wood Elf Thrower
Halfback: Wardancer
Fullback: Ogre
Wide Outs: Wood Elf Catcher, Gutter Runner
Tight End: High Elf Blitzer
Tackles: Black Orc Blocker, Saurus
Guards: Mummy, Troll
Center: Chaos Warrior
Defense
Free Safety: Lion Warrior
Strong Safety: Human Blitzer
Cornerbacks: Witch Elf, Dark Elf Blitzer
Middle Linebacker: Minotaur
Outside Linebackers: Bull Centaur, Norse Blitzer
Defensive Ends: Troll Slayer, Amazon Blitzer
Defensive Tackles: Chaos Dwarf Blocker, Long Beard

Lineman: Longbeard, Lineman Norse, Zombie (for the cost
)
Thrower: Phoenix Warrior
Wide Receiver : Lion Warrior
Blocker: Mummies
Safety: Beastman, Ghouls
Blitzer: Wardancer and other Elf Blitzer

Linemen - Longbeards.
Blitzers - Wardancers
Catchers - AG4, ST3 Catch? Lion Warrior.
Throwers - High Elf, cos he's cheaper than the Dark elf. Humans come close for having Sure Hands.
Blockers - Chaos Warriors.
On an NFL team:
TB - StormVermin
FB - Human Blitzer
QB - High Elf
Catchers - a Wood Elf and a High Elf.
Center - Dwarf Longbeard
Guards - Black Orcs
Tackles - Chaos Warriors
TE - Dark Elf Blitzer.
DE - Trollslayers
DT - Longbeards
MLB - Chaos Warriors
OLB - Orc Blitzers
FS - Lion Warrior
CB - Gutter Runners
SS - Beastman

Lineman - Human lineman (for the price, HE or DE lineman else)
Thrower - Phoenix Warrior
Catcher - Lion Warrior (Gutter Runner are good but without Catch so they are not catchers)
Runner - Gutter Runner (sorry for Dwarf runner
)
Blitzer - Wardancer
Blocker - Treeman (a strength of 6 to block everyone with two dice)

Where can I find the actual positions for each player, 'cause I still can't figure out what a mummy is, a ghoul, a troll slayer etc. Is there any explanation about the different types of positions and players in the LRB, or do I just have to accept the word of the veterans here?

It's just common sense really. Someone who's used for blocking is a blocker. Someone who's used for blitzing is a blitzer. It's not written anywhere, it's just something that you know.
Oh, and i change my vote for best blocker and give it to the mummy!
