'Big Guy friendly' custom pitch - Has anyone done one?

I've been browsing through some of the superb boards on this site made by it's regulars and just wanted to ask something that I can't seem to find an answer for :

Has anyone actually tried to make a pitch with squares larger than the default 25mm to make it more 'big guy' friendly?

Apart from the fact you'd have to create a new range ruler for throwing to scale, I can't see why you'd not really want to have a crack at a larger scale pitch (say 40mm squares) to accomodate the bigger players more easily.

Perhaps I've missed an example? Has anyone got a link or two?

Any reason why players have not done this or don't want to do this?

I am wanting to do my own custom pitch(es) in the future and wondered why people hadn't jumped on the idea already.

players may not want to do this because of the oft outnumbering of big guy figs to the regular ones... a little inconvienience with a big guy is a small price to pay for the rest the minis looking good going at close battle...

maybe not tho...

Fair enough, I can buy that. Even still, is it honestly that difficult to do a larger sized pitch? I saw this one on Ebay which looks pretty swish...

I think the only considerations after this would be the size (for transport reasons) and having to make a customised throw template.

Still, I do wonder if the small amount of inconvenience might be worth it. Since I'm in the process of collecting Dwarfs at the moment... that new Death Roller is a VERY big mini

Sangraal is a bloke from Sydney who has one. He's on WAU, fumbbl, not sure about whether or not he is on here. He's from Northern Sydney - he also has a scaled range ruler to go with it.

The only thing I don't like about the larger pitch is that it is not really feasible to play length ways. Other than that its great.

Here's a thread with the math to 35mm, going to 40mm would be a cinch. I've seen 40mm square pitches. Other than the increased space they take up, they work just fine. Some people judge distances intuitively rather than by always counting squares-- those people will be a bit suprised how "far" things move when you enlarge the squares.

I generally find that with the exception of a few big guys, it's easier to put the big guys on smaller bases. 30mm is about right. The 40mm squares that come with big guys cut down very easily to 30mm squares (just cut off the edges, shorten the sides and re-attach the edges. Alternatively, there's a veriety of round bases available from Litko Aerosystems (a custom base maker of great repute) http://www.litkoaero.com

The other reason why I was considering this too was because I'm a dwarf coach and those Death Rollers (especially the new one) are REALLY big

Still wondering if it's really worth the effort or not.

Has anyone really had much issue with big guys on a standard pitch anyway? I mean, standard squares are about 30mm anyway, right?

Bull Centaurs are a pain in the normal sized squares, as are BGs who fall over. Ogre teams can be annoying too.

TBH I'd recommend anyone doing a custom pitch to aim at 30mm+ squares (IIRC the real ones are 28mm).

Actually, Ian, the squares on a standard BB board are 29mm.

The tricky part wouldn't be the pitch itself I don't think - but rather the damn passing template you'd have to make to adapt. I was thinking perhaps running off a printout that's scaled up on overhead sheet - and from there perhaps use a clear glue to put it on a thin strip of plexiglass or something.

I'd actually be quite interested to hear what other people's experiences are with creating custom passing templates...

I really would like to aim for a 40mm board, but I reckon a 35mm job would be a really nice compromise. The Big guys would still be a few mm too big either side, but still leave plenty of room in surrounding squares for little 'uns to sit in too.
