I just found that the Privateerpress LoE blighted archers make great Dark Elves after snipping off a few weapons.

How about using the Nyss Hunters as Pro-Elves?

Do you not find the PP stuff looks a little large (might just be the figures I have/have seen in the club)?

Currently an ex-Blood Bowl coach, most likely to be found dying to Armoured Skeletons in the frozen ruins of Felstad, or bleeding into the arena sands of Rome or burning rubber for Mars' entertainment.

And that's just bull I'm afraid. 15+ years of gaming, and I still can't paint to a decent standard. Some people just can't paint (just like some people can't play the piano, and some people can't so advanced maths).
If that so, your bull equals mine ;) Sorry to say that, but with all the examples you posted it`s like with everything: practice and effort makes it work. I`m not a big painter myself, all I do is layers. But I did that over and over and over again and I don`t paint a bunch of models in one evening.

Not saying that you do, but some people misjudge lack of talent with lazyness.

Their style resemlbes the one of the 2nd ed. minis and they look a lot more alive. I especially love the pose of the throwers and one of the blitzers. They look like their whole body ist under tension. The catchers are a little static, jumping only straight up, but what I love is their abilty to convert easy. Just lean `em a bit sideways, and they look like they are stretching all the way for catch. If you use a transparent plasticpiece, you can even give them the look of being in the air.
My dislike for the 5th edition GW elfs is that their players look too samey. There really isn’t enough to distinguish between the positionals. Their armour is also a bit bland, I much prefer the more 80’s metal look of the 2nd edition guys. The goofy pose of the catchers doesn’t help either.

Both teams do suffer from having not very well sculpted faces, they don’t look graceful enough to be elves. Mind you much of GW’s elf/eldar models suffer from that, they have improved it in recent years with the newest wood elf and dark elf ranges. I find the masks on the 2nd edition elves superior and more varied too, the hockey masked thrower and blizterare both awesome.

I do really like the illustration Cyanide did for Pro elves and would like to see a model range based on that.

I can't stand the current GW Pro Elf models, and I don't think it's due to nostalgia (although my love of the 2nd edition stuff might be suspect). The faces are uniformly awful (why are they so pinched?) and the bodies are a bit awkward.

I think Gaspez' elves might be nice, if given a better paint job than his studio set.

Seconded. The artwork was fantastic. I actually like the masks on the blitzers thou. It give them a way more evil appeal, which fits their role.

my problem with the new pro elves is the torso's, they just seem a little out of proportion to me

4 catchers and a thrower with hail mary pass, what could possibly go wrong?

In my view the new pro-elves are too stocky, bow-legged and have weird haggard faces. The 2nd ed elves are much cleaner and elegant sculpts even though they have their faults (big hair, pinched faces, big feet). The thing about those faults is that they are ingrained in GW and many other manufacturers style and now just look 'right'.

I also disagree on paintjobs - a poor model with a superb paintjob is still a poor model ;-)

The 5th edtion team is awful. They all look like clones of Alice Cooper.

Some of the character models and most of the heavily armoured models are too large indeed.
The more "regular" humanoid models however are about the size of 2nd edition BloodBowl models

I wouldn't say the 5th ed. efs are terrible, not great, the Blitzers....Ok terrible, but the problem I have with them is that they are so very very small. Reverse scale creep! S.
