Adding magnets. Taking into account the weight of Varag, I decided to play it safe here and carved out the hole to be able to fit two magnets instead of one.
Made a nice little discovery here with regard to liquid sprue here as well! For anyone unfamiliar, 'liquid sprue' is essentially as it sounds. A filler for styrene, made from styrene itself. Traditionally the instructions for making it are to simply chop up bits of sprue into a small sealed container (like a mini jam jar), add some plastic glue, then leave for some time (preferably overnight) until it’s melted into a goo-like form. Then it can be pasted into any gaps or whathaveyou, and when set can be cut/filed etc, as you’d expect from styrene.
With that little injection dimple on the base to fill, I decided to try knocking some of this up on the spot using the dust left over from filing the rim. And as I’d hoped, because it’s a fine power, it quickly activates with the plastic glue to become filler. Obvious in hindsight really, but nice to now know that the stuff doesn’t have to be prepared beforehand!
As you can probably see, the height of that base is pretty big. When fully based, the team are essentially going to look pretty similar to Heroclicks models (though are still dwarfed by the 2016 versions!). Since Varag’s base won’t be displaying any skills, I wanted to add something to help fill the large empty space on his rim.
I decided to put his name there as seems to be quite common in Blood Bowl for stars. I didn’t go with those styrene letters I have spare, as I really don’t like the look of them on base rims. They look too much like alphabet soup letters to me, and I wanted something a bit more Orky and unique!
This will be finished by scribing his name into the plaque in a scratchy, Orc-like font. Then weathering it a bit with some nicks on the sides and adding some rivets to the corners. That isn’t done yet is this is the second one of these I’ve made, having butchered the first with a terrible attempt at scribing! As such I’m practicing on spare styrene for now, until I’m confident enough to try it again. I’m
really tempted to chicken out and just paint the lettering on, but I’m managing to hold that thought at bay

.
I knocked this up to put into the new Citadel painting handle. I was a bit worried about the extra thinness of my model’s bases against the pressure of its springs. This normal base eliminates that with a nice added benefit of letting me swap miniatures even quicker.
This is a mock-up of the colour scheme I’ve settled on for these guys. As simple as this seems there were a LOT of alternatives. I’m really happy with how well balanced this looks though.
Your eyes are not deceiving you. There IS a picture below with actual paint on some models! It has begun....
The plan of attack here is to use pretty much the same colours given in the Warhammer TV tutorial
here. For the bases, I’m not sure yet, but I am tempted to go with the classic dry-brushed ‘goblin green + bleached bone’ grass. I might not even be able to pull that off though, with the texture of the sand being so much less defined from having been sealed.
I’m going to be painting everything in two batches of seven. Quite a big load to me considering how long it is since I last panted anything, but I can foresee 3+ batches taking me
far too long! The first batch is: 4 linemen, 1 thrower, 2 blitzer. Which I think this is the best way to ease into these considering that most work will be on the BOBs and Varag.
But for now, Happy Christmas everyone! Enjoy the holidays.
