it's a mistake to rely too much on painting guides though. Blending: take two colours, paint them on close to each other and while still wet use another wet, clean brush to merge one colour into the other.
the only way to get good at is practice though really

Blending Method A)
paint area colour 1. for example a medium ultramarine blue. Then as paint is fresh (about one or two minutes) paint over highlight area in a colour a litte lighter. Maybe an ice white. now the lighter colour will replace the previous, but mix inbetween because the bottom coat is not dry. Just experiment with subtle colour changes - dont slap white over a medium colour because it will be too obvious.
not bad method but very random. suites quick painters. Needs paint wet to work - bit like an old oil painter
Method B)
paint area colour 1. Now mix some of colour 1 with colour 2 (lighter shade)on a pallette. this will be a controlled "blend" for a highlight. now paint this mixed coour around edges and highlight areas. - crude example a rippled cloth paint the edge and the top of the ripples. Now if you have done this, by extension you will have left some areas in shade by not painting the lighter colour.
Proceed to paint another mix with 2parts colour 2 (lighter maybe ice blue)
and 1part colour 1. this is now a lighter divison again. paint this on even less than prevous highlight. Maybe then if want to do third higlight paint some of colour 2 neat over the smallest areas of the edges.
This is best method for good painters.... good luck
