Paint stripping

Yes, I am afraid it is true... another newbie has joined the boards!
I would put this in the newbie thread, but felt it was more suitable here... but enough rambling:
I have recently re-discovered BloodBowl, and inspite of (what appears to be) JJs best attempts to ruin the game, I am trying to get back into it.
However since the last time I was playing this was when Third edition came out for the first time... my miniatures are looking a little shoddy. my painting skills back then left a lot to be desired!
I have a variety of plastic and metal blood bowl miniatures that I am looking to repaint, but first I need to get the paint already on there off.
How do I do this?
My first guess was with white spirit and an old toothbrush... would that be the best way?
