Well the HighElves armybook has a good paintingthingie. But I don't think you have it.

If I remember correctly there is a onlinepaintingguide somewhere, but I forgot where I saw it.

Can you make the pic without flashlight. It might be better.

Is this the result of Norse coming in 2nd in too many painting competitions? Is that why he insists on trying to make an attractive, well-done paint job look like crap, as some form of latent compensation or something? ;)

I didn't use the flashlight (no shadows, see) I used sunlight and reflectors.. :-?

For those who want to see how nice that paintjob actually is:

yeah, but when it's big you can actually see the 5 different colours on the gem and how to paint them... :P

Fair enough. Would you mind a bit of constructive criticism, then, from someone who is, essentially, a non-painter right now?

I phrase it that way because, while I spend an ungodly amount of time vorasciously reading everything I can on the subjects of mini painting and sculpting, it's all "book smarts" so to speak because I haven't actually picked up a brush in about three years (and when I did, back then, the results were less than impressive, as Darth Noir is threatening to reveal in another thread).

And I ask in an honest attempt to be polite; if you're not interested, I won't say another word.

go ahead... I warn you I am inclined to be defensive, but I know there is room for improvement...

besides, she only took 2 hours, I don't know anyone else that can paint to that standard in that time even if there are a few imperfections..

fire away... I'm not a Mod anymore, so I can't change your post afterwards..

but I can - and I'm for sale - Dave
me too - start bidding! - Draco

OK, I guessed that might be the case when comparing her to other work of yours that I've seen done to a much higher standard. So I've got no problems taking that into account and skipping things that I know a painter of your proven caliber would have -- and has before -- done if more time was taken.

The only real issue I have, then, is not agreeing with you color choice on the gems. The technique itself is certainly done well. But the highlights seem far too pastel for the basecoat that was used. It just seems to me that they should have been brighter as well as lighter -- see the third link I'd posted above for exactly what I mean, colors and all (those damned "book smarts," sorry :-?). Of course, you might have wanted the softer, pastel look but in that case, a more dull base should have been used. As it is, the difference between the base and the highlights looks a bit too jarring -- even in the smaller, smoother pic, look at the color gap on the left knee gem: the top and the bottom colors just seem mismatched

Actually, one more thing, but I don't know if anyone else but me would notice or care: the gem under her breasts shouldn't have been painted the same way as the others. That look for gems is created by the way that light 'pools' in the gem after refracting through the surface shape. But the chest gem, facing down rather than out, wouldn't catch the light in the same way as the others and therefore the same highlighting rules would not apply. But I freely admit in saying so that you can't get much more nitpicky than that, so feel free to be as defensive as you wish about that one! ;)

There, now that wasn't so bad, was it? Was it? Please don't beat me, Dave or Draco!!

fair enough points...

to answer one point - the team were originally High Elves called the Gems of Ulthuan... every player was named after a gem and had different gems per model... this one is Jade.. hence NOT a shiny glossy gem but in reality a semi-precious stone.... a couple of pics of other team members below with more apparent gem like gems.. players like Ruby, Sapphire etc etc

to answer your second point, yeah, the light shouldn't hit the gem quite the same way, but I was too busy painting her tits and didn't give a sh*t... what kind of man looks at gems instead of breats.. you should be ashamed of yourself you big girl's blouse.. :P

I played a full match against these girls and didn't realize there was a gem there. :o

Darn you Norse. I may have won that match if you weren't distracting me with all that clevage. :P On the minis, not you hanging out of that tank top.

Great looking team BTW. Seriously nice!
