Asco da Rana - Slann

Post by Pakulkan »

Hello all,

Here you have my own Slann (thalassian) team painted finally. I used a tournament roster to start painting and used only the miniatures selled in the 15 minis set from GreenDog. I saved the other 4 (one catcher, two blitzers and one lineman) for further painting in a coming league season (probably next one this september).

After many years, I finally painted a team sculpted by me, so it is kind a nice feeling to have a Bloodbowl team 1005 yours, from concept to painting.

Hope you will enjoy them

They look great! I really like the muted otherworldly colours. It is always nice to see different colour combinations, and this one is very striking in its simplicity. Great paint job.

Congrats!
The painting is really nice and the colour choice fits the models quite nicely.

Cheers!

Great stuff man - lovely minis, excellent paint job, and great that you have total ownership. Very cool indeed :)

Now, please - where can I buy these models?

when I saw these minis in isolation I was not originally very impressed, but I must admit the "alien" look works very well, and the paint job is excellent - nice work! :smoking:

you can tell DarkDuke I said that too.. :D

Well, 60€ includes 15 miniatures complete team including all positionals and big guy. I've checked this for you and it is certainly the cheapest offer for a Slann team actually. For the ones interested in, I could bring some teams/minis to the NAF Championship (outside doors) with some of my spanish mates if you want. Take into account also all of them except the linemen are limited edition miniatures coming from 5 different tourneys (Dream Teams Cup, Tabira Bowl, Santakolisseum, Skullcup and Dirty Player Cup).

About the team in particular. When I decided to sculpt this team the aim was so clear. I hate the frog fashion of all Slann teams available.

By background, Slann was a very smart, advanced society both in WH and WH40K (the ones that provide the most background about the race). They always look like "ancient" and "advanced". To me, this have a strong connection with alien, but also with Atlantis and those ancient societies related with aliens or high cosmologic knowns.

My idea was to sculpt a race of aquatic people. As much deeper you go in the sea, as stronger the player is (that's why the big guy is called "Abyssal") reflecting some different castes in this race linked with the positionals. To link them with a smart, advanced society I decided to get their armor clean and simple, useful. This also will allow the painters to exert some freehand work on them.

I know that from the very beginning they were not very popular, and this is also due because they need quite a little work to be mounted properly. Pinning, positioning, etc is needed to get the best of the team. I have quite a short career sculpting BB miniatures (RatMen, these Thalassians and the Besmirch Dwarves plus some other tournament figs) but I also want to go further than that GW showed to us previously. I know this sometimes is not the best bussiness because people usually want teams or miniatures that could fit with previous ones, or with 2nd or 3rd edition fashion, but from the point of view of a freelance sculptor, this will turn the work in a quite financial job other than an artistic work. And it will make it harder (for me at least).

About the painting, I was very concerned about the armor scheme. As the miniatures will have a very colored skin (I planed to have different tones of green for every position) it will mess the final image if the armor is so coloured. I considered two choices:

1- To use a complementary color for green (this means, red/orange). I already painted and have some teams WIP on red and orange, so In discarded it.
2- To use a very neutral color (white, black, grey, bone).

I consider the use of neutral colors enhance in some way the aspect of the team as coming from a separate society in the BB world.

I would thank all your positive comments. As said, is quite a nice feeling to have a team built from the concept to the painting entirely mine. And it is even nicer to see people appreciate the work invested in.

Love it. They are just what I imagine Slann should be. Congrats on the concept.

You're right. :D

There are two blitzer bodies plus 4 different heads.

Also two catcher legs, two torso and two heads.

And finally two linemen legs, two torso and two heads as well.

I used only the pieces that you get with the team set (it was kind of bet, as I have in my house all the pieces that I want to use, but I thank was not worthy for others). I used only the helmet heads because I love them, but you will have 8 different heads for the 4 blitzers figures.

There are also some "froggy" heads inspired in Mon Calamari from Star Wars supplied just in case.

I concede blitzer pics are not took the best to show the two different poses. It was also an issue to sculpt them to reflect they in fact have no "Block" skill. I focus on "Diving Tackle" and positioned them in a standing fashion, with a more defensive look than usual blitzers.
