GW Astrogranite "paint"

has anyone used this? I gave it a go and am having nothing but issues. Next time I am just going to go with painted basing materials

Ive used the textured paints a couple times, for best results give it 2 or 3 coats then when dry give it a wash and dry brush.

it came out in clumps and wasn't spreading at all. I used a dead brush and kind of smooshed it into place, painted it black, then drybrushed the base with red and white. Doesn't look bad, but I was hoping for more texture to it. I will give it another coat or two and see if that helps

Massive waste of money. All such basing paints/gels are truth be told, be they are clear or coloured.

If you want a fine dirt look, use pre-mixed polyfilla (spackle?), blob on a pallette, add a bit of pva wood glue, a bit of water so it spreads more easily, paint on (with an old, crap brush, nylon for preferance, it destroys good brushes), sprinkle lightly with fine sand for a bit more texture but not enough to cover the base.
Gives a really fine, realistic looking finish, far more in scale with the mini's than the image of wading through pebbles, which is how sand often looks, is really durable, and paints a treat.

I like it. the first time I've seen it used was on a necromunda figure my friend was painting. went on easy and then he highlighted it. looked great without having to pull out the sand and mess with glue and all that. I used a different textured color recently on my troll. heres a pic

mine was almost completely just sand/texture/grainey material, but when I added black paint it didn't seem to help. The main issue is most likely the user

Buy acrilic (heavy) gel from art shop and add sand or whatever, they should mix fine with acrylic paints if you don't want to paint over once dry. If trully lazy, buy the modelling pastes, same thing just premixed. In both cases, you get a lot for not much more money. Just checked, Vallejo's Black Lava 6.75 and you get a 200ml pot, Extra Heavy Gel 7.75, Rough Grey Pumice 5.50; at GW 2.30 only gets you 12ml.

may just crush up a cork and some sand into a brown and base with that
