Varnishing inked/wahed minis

Post by Saebelsultan »

Hi, just a quick question. I usually apply varnish with a brush. Now, having applied washes or ink, this technique sometimes destroys the washed/inked effect. Do I just take spray varnish instead? Or is that not worth the try (never used it)? Thanks!

How quickly are you applying it after washing/inking. You should allow about 24 hours drying time before applying your varnish.

I'd say I let ot dry for a day... But maybe I do have to pay attention to that.

brushed-on varnish does indeed ruin inks and the like, usually not thinned paints but I have had bad experiences with brush-on varnish myself. Went over to canned varnish a decade ago, never had any more worries about that, so that's my big tip.

Gloss first (protects better) then matte (looks better)

Try shellac based Windsor and Newton inks, no issues there with paint on varnish. If you matt spray, test it on your paint palette first and only spray incredibly thinly or you may "white out" the miniature and ruin all that work.
