Throwing to an empty square

Post by tonksey »

Quick question; say you have a player with the ball and (in a moment of panic for being surrounded by opposing players near your own touch-down zone) you throw to an empty square up the other end of the pitch to get it away (as all other team-mates are in the dug-out, prone or just not in a good place to catch it/surrounded) successfully - which then scatters 3 times. Does the fact that you've not thrown it to a team-mate to catch mean a turn-over?

It's a yes when it isn't catch by your player after the scatters.

The chanch that that happens is very little, other wise you had trown it immediatelly to that player.

I thought if you nominated an empty square as the target of a pass, its an auto turn over even if one of your players winds up with it after the pass.

Also, on a similar topic... I think that if you nominate a player as the receiver, then the ball scatters from an innacurate pass and another player on your team winds up with it, its a completion but also a turnover. Or am I wrong there too? Don't have a copy of the current rules on me.

A pass is only a turnover if it is fumbled or is not caught by a member of the same team, no matter who (if any) was the target of the pass.

See LRB page 8 for turnovers.

Only an accurate pass counts as a completion, it doesn't matter whick player on your team catches it. This might come up if the pass is accurate but the intended target fails the catch and another of your players catches it, it's still a COMP for SPPs.

A turnover only results if the pass comes to rest on the ground or in the hands of an opponent. If another member of your team comes up with it, no matter how many times it bounces on the ground, it's not a turnover.

A "punt", pass to an empty square, is almost always a turnover. If it can scatter to one of your other players you better think twice about "punting" it in the first place.
