Block, Dump-Off & Pass Block

Post by tafta »

Here's a question about a complex block situation:

A declares a block on B.
B wants to use dump-off to pass to C.
D has Pass Block and moves into tackle zone of B.
B passes to C.
A blocks B with assist from D.

A pretty far-fetched situation, but is this possible? Or are the blocking assists declared before the dump-off/pass block move? It only says that assists are declared after the block declaration in the rules.

Not sure but i would say that the player could not assist with the block. I say this because in the rules it says "After the block has been declared" so when you decleared the block the other player was not there. Also the other player is pass blocking the ball so in theory he will be trying to grab the ball not help with a block.

--->I disagree. The Pass Block player moves into position for the pass, which is completed previous to the block. All results of the Pass happen before the block, then the block occurs. There is no determination of assists until after a block is declared (pg 21, Assists,) and the Dump Off occurs when an opponent declares... (Dump-off text) which is obviously beforehand.

The Pass Blocker may clearly assist the block.

But the block has to be decleared to trigger dump off.

the steps are:

Declare Block
Declare Dump Off
Move Pass blockers
Make pass
determine assists
Make Block

Ie. you don't determine assists before the dump off, as it 'interrupts' the block process.

Agree with GorTex. I would rule that the Passblocker may assist, although it is admittedly a fuzzy area.

Since Pass Block is a rather weak skill, I don't have any problems with this. As a wise man once said: As soon as a player has Pass Block, he'll never do an Interception again.

But Pass Block isn't ABOUT getting the interception. If that were it's only value, then yes, it would be weak. It's about making your opponent deviate from his comfort zone.

I always thought Pass Block was one coach's way of thumbing his nose at the rest of the league, as if to say "ha ha! I can take this stupid fun skill and leave something worthwhile on the table, and still kick your behind!"
