Mercenaries

We've tried to reason this out but still have no definite answer.

When taking a mercenary as an inducement, does the mercenary have to come from your team type or can he/she come from another race. For instance, do lizardmen only get skink, saurus, or kroxigor mercenaries, or can they chose a deathroller and an elven passer.
