i'm with the option that if you dont make the pass at the end of your move then you just lose the pass action for the turn, same as blitz etc.

All i can add is that you start your action with theintention to pass and the situation develops that it would be a disavabntage to continue, then just as in real life caution will come into play and the decision to hold the ball may hold sway. At least in the shadowing option, you know your going to get a blitz free block in next turn.

Just catching up but our league agrees with the points of most of the rest of you (ie a player must declare at the beginning of his turn, and we're usually good sports about it, if they forget to say it and it's obvious we let it go, and so on), with one exception.

Once you pick up the pass range ruler, you must throw the ball. It's not written in the rules anywhere that I'm aware of, but we got sick of people checking the length of passes 5 or 6 times during their turn, and then checking to see if they need to gfi to be in then next closest range, and so on. So we house ruled that once you picked up the ruler, the thrower could make no other movements before passing. Keeps the game moving. We also house ruled the per-turn time limit down to 3 minutes as well, same reasoning.

Just another take on the subject.

Measuring as often as you like and taking the extra gfi to bring it down a range is perfectly fine and not in breach of the rules. The most "beardy" players will have the range firmly in their heads and can tell the range at a glance. This rule doesn't exist because it's better to keep the game simple and playable by all players not just beardies. Declaring a pass before moving is in the rules because it's a mechanic to prevent cheating or bending the rules. We can all remember what is listed as an action and that we must declare an action before moving a piece.
Disregard rules and make your own as much as you like, it's your league. If you play to the letter of the law then your going to have no problems in a tournement through getting your game wrong or by being dicked by someone who convinces you they're right. There are people out there who will ask for you to clarify something, knowing fully that what they're asking is wrong, if you are unsure of the answer they will try to "dick " you!

Guys I gotta disagree with the multiple measures thing. You move your guy, decide whether or not to throw the ball, and then you measure. The rules state it is "...perfectly acceptable to pre-measure the reange to several players before you declare who you will throw the ball to."

This suggests that your movement is over at this point and you have decided to throw, now it is just a matter of who to. If one player is out of range, or you think it's too risky, you may decide instead to throw it to someone else, but if you are measuring, you are done moving.

I think you should have to throw it, too, but that's my opinion.

We went through this one a while back on here. The gist of the argument for measuring 'anywhere, anytime' is that it can be worked out easily enough by counting squares anyway. Any experienced coach worth his salt would be able to do so. Do we need this 'advantage' over less experienced players? Do we all need to memorise the formula to calculate the range? It's just one more unnecessary discipline IMO.
'Anywhere, anytime' keeps things simple and is fair for all.

That comes from playing online where you dont' have a pass ruler. You use pythagorean tables to determine the exact range and note where the ranges fall for each range band. I just remember where the breakpoints are for each range, makes it easier to plot out pass moves during my opponents turn.

Okay, so I'm a freak.

Just a note

Post by Babs »

Worth noting that some of this has been cleared up in the Rules Review.

The Declaration thing has been cleared up, but there is still no 'official' answer for the situation where a player has declared an action and then decides it is too risky because of the situation arising during movement.

I would concur that the action is wasted, no other player may use it - this is promarily a decision to prevent other beardy situations arising. If you're feeling nice, I'd allow another player to pass, Blitz, Hand off or whatever.
