Bouncing Ball query

Post by Scally09 »

When the ball is dropped, or scatters from a player (prone or stunned, failed pickup etc.) does it scatter and then bounce?

Or does it just scatter the once from the player?

I've been playing over a year now and am still unsure of this. I was taught and played that the last thing the ball did was bounce, after it scattered to an empty square. So for example, if the pickup is failed, the ball would scatter from the pleb that dropped it and then bounce one more square. It came up after I saw the Cyanide game and the ball just drops from a player and comes to rest in his tackle zone. Is this correct?

The Rulebook says 'If the ball is not caught... etc ...To find out where the ball bounces to roll for scatter one more time.'
It's the 'one more time' bit that confuses me. Does that mean it scatters then bounces, or just bounces?
Then the Slow-Motion Replay says 'Bob: You said it Jim... ...he's dropped it and the ball bounces away one square.'

This is very confusing and now the coaches in my league are asking about it. I did a search but couldn't find a previous answer to this. so thats why I'm asking.

Thanks Scally.

It bounces just once. The bounce is just worked out using the scatter die.

As you stated, the rulebook says: "To find out where the ball bounces to roll for scatter one more time".

The rulebook states that a player being pushed on the ball will result in a bounce. The same thing happens for failed catches and knock downs on the ball carrier. The wording is a bit awkward but if you read the whole sentence, then it makes sense. Otherwise you'd be rolling for scatter (due to finding out where the ball bounces after the last scatter) forever.

To sum up, it does not scatter from the player. It bounces from the player. The bounce is worked out by rolling the scatter die.

The terminology is a bit mixed in the rulebook. This is how i remember it:

After
- failing a catch or
- pickup attempt or
- pushing a player into the ball or
- landing in an empty square after a kickoff or crowd throw-in
the ball BOUNCES. A bounce is always ONE roll on the D8 scatter template.

The ball SCATTERS using different methods for
- an inaccurate pass (3x D8) or
- a crowd throwin (D6, then 2D6).

Right, ok. I get it. So it'll always end up in the player who dropped its tacklezone. Unless it bounces further, off a prone player or a second failed pick up.

Appologies as well, i should have put this in the rules section, sorry.

Scally.

- at kick-off (d8+d6)
