Ah okay.
Was it cheating or an oversight? Clearly you weren't quite up on the rule. I know I'm not like I should either. Calling someone a cheater is pretty nasty. I'd try and be sure before I called someone on it. See if he'll replay the match now that everyone knows the results are voided due to an illegal team makeup.

They are hired at the end of a match. But you don't have to hire them.
If I want to go into my next match with 9 men and hope to pick up the slack with a Star/Merc.
And if I end up facing a team that's 11 men but not a big enough gap to allow me to get a star (eg. Halflings/Goblins/Thralls) then I've taken a risk and it hasn't paid off.
Decisions regarding journeymen or are risky unless you know exactly who your next opponent is and what TV they'll be at. Personally I don't take the risk and grab the Journeymen.
