Range Ruler question

EDIT: Thanks for the help guys.

I leaned on one of the guys to thoroughly check his room and he found two of the range markers. I may still make my own just so that this doesn't happen again.

****

Hi all, first post.

I mainly am posting because I have given up on trying to find cheap passing range rulers. I have gotten most of the information I need to make my own.

However, I have one question:

Where is the dot to place the ruler over the passer's head in relation to the passing bands? Is the center on the edge of the first band or 1/2 square off?

Ie, Is it:

Code: Select all

| Quick Pass | Short Pass |
O | |
| | |

-or-

  | Quick Pass | Short Pass |
O | |
  | | |

Any help is appreciated.

A little history: I have 2 1/2 sets of the game minus the range rulers. I believe sometime a few years ago when my friends and I had consolidated our games, one eventually came along and took his back. However I think he inadvertly took all of the range rulers. Now many years later we can't find them and we want to play.

However, no one remembers who may have the rulers. I am going to buy a sheet of Acetate film and make several of my own and I know the lengths, 3.5, 3.5, 2.5, 2.5 squares per range from Quick Pass to Long Bomb. But I don't remember the location of the starting dot in relation to those ranges.

Thanks again,

Sothicus

From memory, I'd say it's the second example you listed. Maybe someone with one in front of them can tell you better than I. You can declare a pas to a player in an adjacent square after-all.

OTR, it really doesn't matter much as long as all your leagues rulers are the same.

#2 is correct.

I thought someone had a pdf on the ruler that you can download, but I can't remember who it was. I'm going to see if I kept a copy.

Thanks, if anything it will help varify my lengths. Do you know if it is "to scale" by chance?

Another thing.. I've read that the lengths are:

Quick Pass: 3.5 squares
Short Pass: 3.5 squares
Long Pass: 2.5 squares
Long Bomb: 2.5 squares

However, the picture you just sent looks like the Long pass is the same as the Short pass length. Any veracity in the lengths I mentioned above?

Thanks,

Sothicus

AFAIK it's not to scale, but I don't know if that's do do with screen resolutions or anything (not that computer au fait). The ratio for the distances is correct though.

3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 2.5. Only Long Bomb is shorter than all the rest.

And #2 is correct, the ruler measures out 13 squares but is itself 14 squares long, since 1 square is the "thrower's" square

The second range band (you can tell how much I use it!! lol) is not 7 sq total distance from the thrower. It's one of those (slightly) contentious issues that a couple of players allow as the shorter but if you put the hole in the centre of the throwers sq then the range band is just shy of 7 sq (by about 3 or 4 mm, but enough to be discernable).

So it would be (approx) 3.4, 3.4, 3.4, 2.8

it's really not 3 or 4mm off... that would be pretty blatant. Perhaps you measured in one of the poorly scaled sections of the pitch though if you really saw THAT much difference (since i am aware that the pitch is not created with perfect dimensions) Or are you using the astrogranite pitch?

If you measure across the line of scrimmage you might get a few extra mm as it buckles a bit there.
This makes you able to pass the ball 13 squares from a square just behind the scrimmage line and right into the endzone.

No. Deffo using the current pitch and range rulers.

well... _your_ current pitch... not all pitches are the same size, heck not even all squares on one pitch are the same size.

Its scaled to the 2e styrofoam Astrogranite pitches with 25mm squares.
4 squares (10cm)
4 squares (10cm)
4 squares (10cm)
Short Bit (7.9cm)

They just didn't bother retooling the ruler when they changed the pitch size.

The minis fit better in the larger squares. The original squares were sized to the standard base size -- JJ apparently forgot that the actual minis took up more space than that, and things would get pretty crowded in a scrum.

Cheers,
Maureen
