Sidestep and picking up the ball

Post by besters »

I have had a look but can't find this as a topic, It probably is there but I have missed it.

I know that when you are pushed back into a square with the the ball you cannot pick it up, that's on page 9 in the LRB.

What I can't find is what should happen when you are pushed back but have sidestep and use this skill to move to the ball. Does this still count as a pushback and you can't pick the ball up, or can you now attempt to pick up the ball?

I have had this happen in a game and allowed the pick up attempt, but I don't know if this is the correct interpretation.

The pick up attempt should not be allowed. A side step pushback is the same as normal one, with the only difference that the blocked player chooses to which square he is pushed.

My Bulls have the "Thin Skull" trait. After every block they make, roll a D6. On a 1+ they get ko-ed and stay in the ko-box for the rest of the game.

Nothing changes from the original rules, you are pushed back, all that is different is that you get to pick where you are pushed to.

So, ball scatters as normal.

Thanks for the responses, they agree with my original thoughts!

Does anybody have a different view?

This reminds me: I once had Sidestep used against me in a really clever way. There was a skirmish over the ball, which was sitting along the sidelines. his hopes of getting the ball back were fading, as my opponent (Human) had his star Catcher (AG4, Block, SideStep and something else, I think -- it was a long time ago) standing next to the ball (he failed the catch) and I had an Orc Blitzer on him and a wide-open Thrower only a couple of squares away. I'd just BHed the Blitzer protecting his Catcher and KO'ed a Lineman, and his blitz the next turn got no result ("both down" and both had Block), so his bad luck, combined with risky behavior had put him in some straits. I blocked his Catcher, and knocked him down. He used Side Step to land on the ball, on the 3-in-8 chance it would scatter off the board and get thrown into no-man's land, where his faster players would have an advantage. The ball did go off the board, and it bounced out into the open, but I got it anyway and his Catcher was stuck on the sidelines with a Blockler sitting on him. I don't think it was the right thing to do, but it sure was a lot of fun!

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

You say you don't think it was the right thing to do. Did you mean morally/tactically? Or did you believe that the rules should have gone another way? Because, it seems to me that was a perfectly viable use of sidestep. A little risky, but if you're desperate... Anyway, just my $0.02.
