however, if you happen to be of the opinion that it's a really STUPID RULE, you could always get your league to house rule it so you could choose not to catch it.

just thought i'd mention that... :)

One example - Players already moved that turn, and the ball bounces to him?

exactly. let me draw you the picture... you're a wood elf team playing defense against a cage, and you do the "leaping wardancer cage bust" (tm) play. You move up some elves to surround the cage to cut assists and so on. The idea is that the WD will jump in, hit the ballcarrier, and pop the ball out to an empty square so another elf can run by, scoop it up, hand off to another elf, who moves, passes to yet another elf, who scores (or at least gets as FAR away from everybody else as possible)

now, if bob the slapass line elf who was sent in to cut off an assist happens to CATCH the ball, and he's already moved, that puts a real big hole in your plan, because now he's stuck with it. you're SCREWED.

that's a perfect example of why being forced to catch the ball is stupid.

You won't have possession for long in my example. That blitz move is usually about the last thing you do that turn after setting up for it, so that elf is going to be stuck next to somebody (as will a bunch of his team mates) that is eager to pound the crap out of them, even if they DON'T have the ball.

IMO you either need to have optional catches, or re-institute the rule that allows you to take a handoff from a player that's already acted as part of your move action, or even both. Our league allows optional catches. Those two rules together really SCREW good strategic plays, and why would you want to do that?

Oh, and don't forget that you can use a REROLL to try and fail a catch if you'd like.
