Is this a touchback???

Post by kano »

If you do this:

Place ball on defenders 1/2 of pitch
Scatter ball d6 d8 and the ball ends up on the sideline
Resolve kick-off table
Bounce ball, ball goes off pitch or on kicking teams side of pitch

I say that it is a touchback because the ball went off the pitch or isnt on the receiving team's half of the pitch before the receiving team had their turn, but the commish in our league says that it isnt a touchback because if it lands in the field of play, and it bounces off the pitch or onto the kicking teams side, that it isnt a touchback and the crowd throws the ball back in if it goes off the pitch in that situation..........If this is the right way of doing it, I would like to know since I have been doing it wrong for about a year now........

It's a touchback. If the ball comes to rest outside the field of play or across the line of scrimmage after a kick then it is a touchback. That includes bounces and missed catches.

This is a touch back.

There is no crowd throw in action from a kick-off.

Both the kick and the bounce have to end on the receiving team's half for it to be played without a touch back.

Bouncing (off the kick landing) or scattering (from a failed catch attempt of the kick) across the LOS or into the crowd is a touch back and thus ball in hand.

Period.

Papa's right! :D

P6 LRB 5.0: The Kick-Off (third paragraph, half-way down) "If the ball scatters or bounces off the pitch or into the kicking team's half, the receiving coach is awarded a 'touchback' and must give the ball to any player in (sic) his team." (italicizes mine)
