Hiring freebooter phase, who goes first?

Here's a quote from the LRB 4.0 about Star Players being hired by both teams:
Each Star Player may be hired once per team. It is possible (though unlikely) for both teams to hire the same Star Player, If this happens then neither may use him and he keeps both sets of hiring fees!
Because of this, it seems to me that the first player announcing his freebooters is at a disadvantage since his opponent has the option to "counter" him if he can.

To my knowledge there is no clear rule on who goes first in the freebooter phase.

Take this hypothetical example where two orc teams get to play one another in the final phase of a league. Team 1 is crippled with injuries and can only field 10 players but has 150K in bank. Team 2 is healthy and has 180K in bank.

If Team 1 first announces his freebooters, Team 2 can buy the same guys and make sure his opponent starts with 10 players on the pitch. If Team 2 goes first, Team 1 will be able to get at least one freebooter.

How should this situation be dealt with? Who goes first in the freebooter phase?

thank you,

Simple thing - don't declare freebooters until starting the game.

Darkson - I don't get it.

Under LRB 4.0 rules, you have to annouce your freebooter before the game starts.

Is this a new rule with LRB 5.0? I am not familiar with 5.0 yet. My league will switch to these new rules after the current season is completed.

Both players buy their freebooters, BEFORE they declare who they've brought. Only after both players have, say, hired a star, do they say who've they've hired. Then you compare.

There is no "goes first" in the hiring phase - each coach does it independently of the other, then you compare rosters. of course, if one coach wants to announce that he's hiring Griff, then he shouldn't be surprised if the other does as well (if able).

Under LRB 5 there's a "overdog goes first rule".

Ah, I see: Freeboter are written on the roster before announcing them!

We never played this way but it makes sense.

thanks Darkson!
