Pushing onto ball or off-field

If your opponent blocks a player, pushes back, and has a choice between a square with the ball lying in it, or off the field, he HAS to push to the spot with the ball on it.
My opponent was saying the square with the ball counts as an occupied square, so he can push my player into the crowd. I disagreed and said he has to push onto the ball, which would subsequently bounce one square, because you can't pick-up a ball that you are pushed on too.
I ultimately convinced him I was right, but a just verifying my logic was correct.

The square with the ball in it does NOT count as occupied. You can even push someone on the ball even if there are other eligible empty squares.

You don't even need to argue logic.
LRB 5.0 p.10 wrote:The player must be pushed back into an empty square if possible. A square containing only the ball is considered empty and a player pushed to it will cause the ball to bounce (see page 13).

Yup ... LRB 5.0 changed the wording to deal with this FAQ.

Figured, I have not been able to find my LRB today, so I just asked instead of trying to find it.
Wish I had it last night when this came up, would have saved me alot of headache. Still lost the game, but he would have been less annoying. Smug bastard.

A similar question, you can't pick up the ball if you end up in the square from a pushback? Correct?
One of those chain push backs scenarios, and a guy ended up on the ball, but because he wasnt the one that got blocked, he was saying he could try to pick up the ball. This was another game, which I also found to be wrong. Anyone who is involved in a pushback, either the original player or subsequent players are still considered to be pushed back. Right? And push back means you can't pick-up the ball.

That is right, anyone that is pushed on the ball no matter how they were pushed, the ball bounces 1 square from that space.

Dwarfrunner,
Re-Read the sentence in red from the LRB 5.0 that Darkson posted.

Sorry, guess I misinterpreted the quote. Ideally, if it said "any player" instead of "a player", my feeble brain might have comprehended it better. But thats just my slow Canadian brain at work. As it gets colder, I get dumber.
