Played with a new group tonight and we ran into an issue dealing with assist...one of us is misunderstanding something. Maybe you guys can help us clarify =)

Here's the question: Defensive assists during fouling.

Do the defending assisters have to be touching the victim of the foul, or the player perpetrating the foul? The wording under assisting a block is very explicit, but the wording under assisting a foul is somewhat muddy...pg. 24 of the LRB 1.3 if you want to look it up. The argument is that assisting a block and assisting a foul are completely different things and abide by completely different rules...one of us thinks assisting works the same for both blocking and fouling (defending assister needs to touch the blocker/fouler), one of us thinks that for fouling the defending assisters need to touch the victim of the foul, not the fouler.

Just like in a block, you have to have your assists TZs on the victim. You cannot assist a foul if someone is standing in your tackle zone. Unlike a block, though, Guard is of no use to a foul.

Umm, I think you had a switch somewhere in your wording Cerv, because needing TZs on the victim would mean assisting fouls works differently than it does for a block...

Defensive assists for fouling, do work in exactly the same way the assists for blocks do. Otherwise, it could be like this..

Where F is fouling V, but V is getting an assist against F from A... I don't think he can really help that much from all the way over on the other side.

i must admit i always played it differently than assisting a block, but by reading the rules again it isn t clearly stated. that s on LRB p24

for the one doing the foul : "The coach nominates the victim, and then makes an Armour roll for him, adding +1 to the score. Other players that are adjacent to the victim may assist the player making the foul, and each
extra player joining in adds a further +1 to the Armour roll."

now the defensive one :"Defending players may also give assists to a player that is being fouled. Each defensive assist modifies the armour roll by -1 per assist. No player may assist a foul if they are in the tackle zone of an opposing player and no player may assist a foul if he is not standing"

i think the confusion come from the wording "Other players that are adjacent to the victim may assist the player making the foul"

so vesticle you re prolly right..

Blocking and Fouling Assists are handled exactly the same. As pointed out the only difference is Guard.

Read the sentence again. "may assist the player making the foul" This is referring to the offensive assists.

And Galak is right in that you do foulling assists just like block assists. Defenders need to be unmolested in the TZ of the person committing the foul to offer an assist
