though picking up the ball is not an action, does it count as using 1 square of MA?

No, picking up the ball is a free action that takes place automatically when you enter a square with the ball. It does not require a point of movement.

Note that picking up the ball is also mandatory. You must pick it up if you move onto it. The only exception is if you are pushed onto the ball after a block, in which case you do not get to pick it up, it will scatter.

Or if you have the No Hands skill in which case it scatters and, if part of the moving teams turn, a turnover occurs.
