Q: May I use Side Step or Stand Firm while stunned or prone?
A: Unless stated otherwise all skills and traits may be used while prone/stunned, this also covers Side Step and Stand Firm despite their names, so yes.
The recommandation by Galak and DoubleSkulls is that you houserule them so they don't work while prone.
Read this at Specialistgames forum. What are the stated rules? Isn't this from LRB4 or doe's it work in LRB5?

LRB 5 says on page 23:
6. Only Extraordinary skills work when a player is Prone or Stunned.
Neither Side Step nor Standfirm ist an extraordinary skill, so they cannot be used while the player is prone or stunned.

In LRB5, only Extraordinary skills work when a player is Prone or stunned (pg 23, point #6 under skills).
Of course, there are exceptions (disturbing presence for example)
Neither Side Step or Stand firm state that they work while prone (Side step works on the push that knocks you down, but once you are down you can't use it as it is not an extraordinary skill).
so, the Q&A you quoted must apply to LRB4 or previous

It is from my Q&A and it is clearly noted as to apply to LRB4 only, note there is a LRB5 Q&A at the same place which says:
Q: May I use Side Step or Stand Firm while stunned or prone?
A: No.
