Strip Ball vs Stand Firm

Post by Andromidius »

If a player with Stand Firm has the ball and is blocked by a player with Strip Ball, how does this work?

I'm assuming the ball is still dropped, but in the square that the Stand Firm player is already standing in (since he'd not pushed back). Does he then get to attempt to catch it?

Which also makes me wonder if a player that is pushed back gets to try and catch the ball. Can he?

Only if the ball bounces back to him.

Note the player drops the ball AFTER the pushback, so assuming the players TZ is clear, he'll have no chance to catch it as it will not scatter back to him.

Also note that the dropped ball doesn't first land in the square it was dropped in. You roll a D8 to see which way it went and that is the first square that the ball can possibly be caught in.

Getting back to the first part of the question, does the player drop the ball? The wording of "Strip Ball" is very awkward, suggesting that it is the application of the "push back" or "defender stumbles" results that make the ball fall, not the pushback itself. And "Stand Firm" doesn't indcate that the Push Back or Defender Stumbles result is cancelled, only that the player may choose not to move.

"He may chose to ignore being pushed by "pushed" results..."

So... the result is still applied, but the defender may ignore it? Ergo, the ball is dropped even if he doesn't move?

It's very awkward. Clearer wording in the rules might have removed the confusion.

Did the blocker roll a push back result?
Yes.
Therefore he can use strip ball.

No clarificcation needed.

Ding ding! See the text of Sure Hands for something that specifically denies the ball-dropping effect of strip ball.

Agreed .... clarification is only needed if you are trying to read more into the rule than the words that are there.
