Diving Catch vs. Catch

Hi,
i have a question about diving catch: In LRB5, it says, if 2 players with diving catch "compete" for the pass, they cancel each other out.
So far, so good, but: What happens if a player with diving catch is in an adjacent square from an intended passreceiver of the other team, and that passreceiver gets an accurate pass thrown to him?
Can you try to "dive-catch" it, i.e. thereby intercepting the pass, or can you cancel out the normal catch by activating the diving catch?
Or are you simply a nuisance to the intended receiver, giving the normal +1 by standing in his tackle zone and possible interception, if under the passing template?

The ball wouldn't be landing in an empty square so the Diving Catch couldn't be used. The player would just be causing a +1 modifier on the intended reciever.
