Too many players on the pitch

I could have sworn that this is addressed in LRB5 but I cant find it anywhere.
Are there specific rules for what to do when one player fields over 11 players and it is not noticed during set-up?
I play in another league that uses 3rd ed rules and in that league the opposing coach can select a player to remove.
It's possible that what I'm remembering wasnt in the rulebook but was a post on this site. I tried to search for a questions like this, but I didnt have any luck.
Thanks,
TL

There is not any official rule on how to handle it.
I prefer the "opponent chooses which players to remove" solution as it discourages trying it on. Other people do remove random player, IP & remove player etc.

yer I've always played it as a random player a D12 comes in handy
assuming it is only 1 extra player they put on the pitch ;]
or a D16 if all their players are numbered

If your opponent doesn't notice...fine. Happened once in a League I ran. Everyone was watching and sniggering because they'd seen it! But the poor sod who was playing didn't for 10 turns until somebody asked him if he could count. Harsh but funny!

Table 1, final round of a tournament, someone fielded 12 players for the whole first half and neither player noticed until half time.

It was me!

If you AND your opponent are sporting (i.e., (s)he doesn't make a pain of him/herself) then use common sense.... Usually they'll have all positionals and too many linemen... randomly remove a lineman.... Or anything else that's reasonable.... But, have a standing rule ready for those who can't play nice....

Agree with all the above. Actually, in the days of the GW specialist games forum, I believe someone (Darkson?) gave a semi-official ruling that your opponent chooses which player to remove. At least, I got that from somewhere, because we treat that as the official rule in Yorkshire.

Personally this is how I'd play it. The unpredictability of 'who the ref' sends off seems to fit better in my mind

Happened to me recently - opponent very sportingly offered to remove the ball carrier!!! Decided a lineman who was in the middle of the pitch not doing much was more appropriate.
We only noticed when I injured one of his players and spotted he had no-one in his reserves box...
Nominally (if you want to be really mean), I reckon it could be called as an illegal procedure and deal with it with the turnover / re-roll stuff in the rules - at least until someone gets KO/Injured (though I never use the illegal procedures myself...)

I feel that fielding more than 11 players should be addressed somehow in the rulebook.
Surely, fluffwise, fielding extra players is less offensive than fielding weapons or foul-kills?
Gamewise it can be breaking though, I always offer losing RR and player chosen off by opponent if I accidentally field extras.
It could be added that opponent must accept setups and if more than 11 are fielded and accepted there's no problem, but this could be horrible for newbies.
Or something else.

In my league we've let the other player decide wether they want to restart the game from turn 1 or simply remove one of the offending coaches players.
This reminds me of when I played in a tournament not long ago. My first game was against a lizard team and it went really well for me; I felt like I had total control most of the time on the field.
Only afterwards did we realize that my opponent had played the whole game with only 9 players on the pitch!
(I did reflect in the beginning that he had unusually many players in the reserves box, but just assumed that the liza<rds where cheap

I looked it up, here's the rule we have:
"If you accidentally set up more than eleven players and this is discovered later in the match, your opponent chooses which surplus players are removed immediately and placed in the Reserves box."
I'm pretty sure we must have seen this as an 'official' ruling at some point or it wouldn't have made it into our rulebook.

I think something like this is what I'm going to add to our league rules.

In the 3rd ed league that we run here we use this rule as well. Plus it is the 3rd IP rule to boot so its spend a reroll or its a turnover, pretty harsh!
Thanks for all of your input guys,

This seems prone to abuse if you just wait until you can really bone the opponent to point it out.
