Side Step and Chain Push

OK, brief synopsis. Side Step allows the owning player to side step into ANY adjacent square (LRB CRP emphasis, not mine) and is only negated by Grab and having no empty squares.

Can the Side Stepper therefore choose any square? Including the square of the player making the block?

the player with side step can choose any square that is free. Since the follow-up is done after the player is pushed, I would say he can't be moved to the square where the blocking player was, since it is not free at the time of the pushback...

Same as it's always been.

Exactly, sequence involves push back before follow up... therefore, the blocking player's space is not available....

Sorry pelle (and everyone else), but you've added the word "free" in yourself. The skill just says "any adjacent square". The only time occupation of adjacent squares becomes an issue is if they are all full - until then it genuinely looks like they are all fair game! (reread the skill)

It's clear what the intention of the rule is. And I don't see why the Side Step rule overrides the normal pushback rule that an empty square must be chosen first.
A player that is pushed back as a result of a block
must be moved one square away from the player making the
block, as shown in the diagrams. The coach of the player who
made the block may decide which square the player is moved to.
The player must be pushed back into an empty square if
possible.
Side Step (Agility)
A player with this skill is an expert at stepping neatly out of the way of an
attacker. To represent this ability, his coach may choose which square
the player is moved to when he is pushed back, rather than the opposing
coach. Furthermore, the coach may choose to move the player to any
adjacent square, not just the three squares shown on the Push Back
diagram. Note that the player may not use this skill if there are no open
squares on the pitch adjacent to this player. Note that the coach may
choose which square the player is moved to even if the player is
Knocked Down after the push back.

Note that the player may not use this skill if there are no open squares on the pitch adjacent to this player.
also that part points towards having to move to "free" squares

been out in the sun too long over the weekend geoff ;]

Re-read my explanation.... You simply cannot move into the blocking player's square, on the pushback, because IT AIN'T UNOCCUPIED!

Push back before follow up....

Cheers Joemanj - I was reading the skill in isolation (hence getting fixated on the "any square" part). Best counter is the push back rule.

Sorry for any possible confusion chaps

Not quite the same level (I hope!!! )

Just couldn't figure another way of reading "any adjacent square" until The Manj popped up with the Blocking bit (in my defence I tried ringing Manj over the weekend to discuss..!!)

I've heard this before. It's the munchkin diaries!

As stated - push back to an empty adjacent square. Hence the blocker has a chance to follow up after the blocked has been push backed. Therefore, as stated above, the blocker's square is not empty.

Slightly different question - Is it correct that the blocker has to commit to the follow up before knowing where the side stepper moves to? (this is how the video game works)
