blood lust clarification

Post by happygrue »

My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I looked among the other threads and didn't see it.

When a vampire fails blood lust he must feed at the END of the action (or just before the end in the case of a pass, hand off or score), correct? It seems clear in the rules for the blood lust skill, however I got into a debate about it tonight with an opponent who was arguing that the line
Once the Vampire has bitten a Thrall he may complete his Action.
means that the vampires could bite and run. That is, declare a move action, and failing blood lust move to a thrall, bite, and then continue moving ("continuing the action").

This seems against the context that the line was in to me, but since I am a very new player I wanted to look for a more official ruling.

Thanks!

EDIT: Here is the full text of blood lust, for the sake of completeness
Vampires must occasionally feed on the blood of the living, Immediately after declaring an Action with a Vampire, roll a d6: On a 2+ the Vampire can carry out the Action as normal. On a 1, however, the Vampire must feed on a Thrall team-mate or a spectator. The Vampire may continue with his declared Action or if he declared a Block Action, he may take a Move Action instead. Either way, at the end of the declared Action, but before actually passing, handing off, or scoring, the Vampire must feed. If he is standing adjacent to one or more Thrall team-mates (standing, prone or stunned), then choose one to bite and make an Injury roll on the Thrall treating any casualty as Badly Hurt. The injury will not cause a turnover unless the Thrall was holding the ball. Once the Vampire has bitten a Thrall he may complete his Action. Failure to bite a Thrall is a turnover and requires him to feed on a spectator – move the Vampire to the reserves box if he was still on the pitch. If he was holding the ball, it bounces from the square he occupied if he was removed and he will not score a touchdown if he was in the opposing end zone.

Completing the action entails a bite, pass, handoff, or touchdown. The skill is very clear that if you blood lust you must bite at the END BUT BEFORE PASS/HANDOFF/TOUCHDOWN.

You are correct, your friend is wrong.

It only says that with regards for Passing, Hand Offs and Touchdowns. Those are exceptions to stop people playing against the spirit of the Bloodlust rule. If it didn't say that for example then someone could fail Bloodlust and just run in for a Touchdown without biting a Thrall.

What about a Foul Action ? Does the foul itself happens before of after the bite ?

In what why is "Either way, at the end of the declared Action, but before actually passing, handing off, or scoring, the Vampire must feed?" ambiguous?

You roll for the Foul before rolling for the Thrall injury.

The reason those actions take place afterwards is because they cause a turnover if they fail (or succeed in the case of scoring) which means you won't be able to bite a Thrall and lose the Vampire.

If you suffer a turnover from a foul action then you lose the Vampire off the pitch anyway. Biting the Thrall as well was deemed to be too harsh, especially as the skill was being toned down already.

Of course if you asked me I would say fouling with a Vampire was something you shouldn't be doing in the first place, the risk of them getting sent off isn't worth it compared to removing the player you are fouling more often than not. It is a rare situation when you can't get a Thrall to do the foul which makes far more sense.

Thanks for the clarification and the rationale behind the rule. That makes perfect sense. Not that I would want to Foul with a Vampire but who knows 8)

Sorry for necroing this thread, but I figured it'd be better then starting a new one.

If I intentionally fail a Bloodlust, I am still able to Pass with the Vampire in question, as long as I bite a Thrall before the Pass, right?

As in: I declare a Move+Pass with Vampire. Bloodlust fails, and I do not re-roll, saving it for the pass. The Vamp moves to a Thrall and bites him. He is then able to throw the Pass? Is that correct?

not intentionally, just saving the re-roll for something more important
