Not catching

OK this came up tonight. Game was level, last turn they had the ball. needed to blitz the ball loose then scoop with a thrower to pass to a catcher able to score. blitz went in and the carrier goes down, ball then bounces to where my blitzer is and so...
Does he have to try and catch it? I think yes cos using skills is optional but catching a ball in your square is not. A catcher would not have to re-roll a failure as that is a skill use but you do have to catch it.

Am I wrong?

correct, you have to try to catch but you don't have to use the skill.

Not according to the rule:

Catch (Agility)
A player who has the Catch skill is allowed to re-roll the D6 if he fails a
catch roll. It also allows the player to re-roll the D6 if he drops a hand-off
or fails to make an interception.

The way it is written you can only reroll if you fail.

ahh you are correct there was a thread somewhere that went a while and the final was you cannot use catch but you can use the team RR

Yeah I've seen many halves end because someone got the ball who has acted. Never follow up these blocks if you can help it.
