bombadiers and prone players

Guys,
tried the search function, didnt find what i wanted so heres the question (which someone will point out has been answered several times before)
If my bombadier throws a bomb which lands next to my prone player (either accurate or after scatter, doesnt matter) does my prone player take an armour roll on a 4+ ?
i didnt think he had to as the rule says; players can be hit by a bomb and treated as knocked down even if they are already prone or stunned
i took this to mean that the bomb had to land "on the player" (bombs dont bounch) and as he was prone he didnt get a chance to catch it so it explodes, my opponent (who is far more knowlegable than me!!) read it as "hit on a 4+ " as it landed in an adjacent square, if he's right and the armour fails is it a turn over? a player from the moving team has not been knocked down (as he was already prone) but has possibly been stunned or even K.Oed or become a casualty??
Ive always thought prone players where safe unless the bomb actually landed on them, in which case they make in immediate armour roll, which is why i never stood players up near the "target square" until after the Bombadier had taken his action...
Please answer using small simple words.....
