How to correct an opponent gracefully.

How do you politely point out to an opponent that they are wrong?
I was playing a leaguemate, great guy, first match against him. He has been playing for 20 yrs or so and has been to a couple of large tournies. But his mental rule set is outdated or old. Examples: He is moving a halfing out of a TZ fails the roll rerolls using dodge...success...then he moves another space...another failed dodge, but he thinks he cannot reroll this second one with a team reroll because he already rerolled a different dodge roll and used a skill reroll. Secondly he kept trying to add +1 to the stunty injuries and I was telling him no it is just 7=KO and 9=BH no need to roll on the injury table.

Tried to take out the rule book and read to him the stunty rules but not sure he understood what I was trying to tell him. Plays well, gave me a run for my money with his flings tonight. I am just sick of being the league "newbie" and knowing the rules better than them and not being able to get my point across because they won't fully listen to what I am saying or read the entirety of the rulebook.

In a lighthearted manner,
"man ole man, the rules must have changed 100 times since you last played"
"The GW site (in the Blood Bowl section) has the latest update. I know it screws me up with the change to diving catch all the time."
And to be a great Chum I took the liberty to print you out a set

Why didn't you use a reroll on that?

Oi idiot you could use a reroll on that?

Reread the rules numbnuts!

Do what he does but correctly!

As long as he does not reroll armour rolls

Generally, if you know you're right about something, then humility is the order of the day:

"is that right, I think I must have misunderstood the wording..."
"I haven't played the old rules, but from my reading..."
"I used to play that, but someone corrected me..."

My standard is "I thought that the rule was this..."

e.g. I thought Wood Elf Catchers could only move 8 now?

Of course the trouble is that if they disagree with you, you can look a bit like a tool when you persist. And if you're viewed as the newb then they'll likely dismiss what you say.

I think you have to avoid diffidence. But if you want to avoid the out and out statement, you can go with the "why didn't you use a reroll?" But that will probably still need to be followed up with an explanation. Ultimately, if they can't/won't understand, I think that the best solution is to make them realise that there's a new set of rules.

If they won't listen, play the rules as written, and then when they pick you up on what they think is wrong, ask them to show you in the latest rules.

Of course, if they've decided to use the old rules...

Bite your toungue during the match, play it out.
After the match, quitely sit and read the rule book.
"Hey, Dave*, that thing you did has changed. It's now done like this......."

*Ever league has at least one Dave.

No daves :( but 3 jasons! :o

And I just want to make sure I am telling him the rule correctly. And yes I looked up rerolls in the CRP on page 14 and it says "you may only reroll any dice roll once" I think he and I had a different interpretation of the same dice roll.

Dodge, fail dodge reroll w/skill, succeed, move, dodge again (a second time), fail, reroll with team reroll. (and then just for giggles, if you succeeded, dodged again into a new square, fail and had pro you could effectively reroll the each of your disinct 3 dodges, with enough skills and a team reroll)

In other words you can never reroll the same exact roll more than once, but you can reroll the same type of roll multiple times in a turn if you use various ways to do it. Also you can only use a skill reroll once per turn.

Just been kind, 'hey ------, I think it works this way-----' or something along that line, one of five things could happen in my experiance.
1.They admit there mistake and they continue as normal
2.Get a little embarrised and continue as normal
3.Get mad but continue as normal
4. Ignore you and continue their way.
5. Get mad and continue their way.
If they continue their old/incorrect way being either mad or ignoring you that that just reflects poorly against them not you. Its no skin off your nose if they continue to play the wrong way.

Of course you can also simply wait for the apology when your opponent realises he can't add up, right inkpwn?

That's the rule exactly. The fact that he's wrong to his own detriment is just funny though. Explain it calmly and cheerfully and say it's cool dude, if you want to save your rerolls that's fine with me. :)

I don't even think it's an outdated rules thing. I think it's a misinterpretation and he's just got set in his ways. If he's using Halflings and using that wrong interpretation he has to be a very patient (or stubborn) coach. Maybe pointing out that there's different modifiers on each roll could convince him he's making a different dice roll and so can use a team reroll?
