When can I use my apothecary?

Do I have to use my apothecary when the injury is first rolled or can I use it after the player has been placed in the dugout?

The first part of the rules indicates that apothecaries can be used at any time, but later on in the section it infers that they can only be used at the time of the injury - which is correct?

Obviously a player that is healed in the dugout cannot return to the pitch until the start of the next drive after he was healed.

They are both correct! :wink:

You use the apothecary immediately after the injury is suffered, but this can be at any stage of the match. (The bit that says they can be used at any time means that they can be used before the match has begun (for an assassin's injury) or in your opponent's turn, or whenever!)

They are both correct!

You use the apothecary immediately after the injury is suffered, but this can be at any stage of the match. (The bit that says they can be used at any time means that they can be used before the match has begun (for an assassin's injury) or in your opponent's turn, or whenever!)

Are you SURE?! If so, then Beady-Eyed Bastard (skaven lineman) need not wait out a game and go into coaching.... I was saving the apothecary in case someone got dead... and no-one suffered any more injuries, so I thought I was tsool....

I've no idea what "tsool" means, but if you are saying that you were saving your apothecary in case someone dies and was intending to use it at the end on another injury if nobody does die, then, no, you can't do this. You can only use the apothecary immediately after the injury is suffered.

Apothecaries must be used immediately when the player suffers an injury. An Apothecary may not be used to heal injuries for players pushed into the crowd.

IMO it sounds like another inconsistency, since as Ian points out in his quote, it says you must use the apoth immediately when you suffer the injury, yet only a few lines down, it says "At any time during the match the Apothecary may attempt to cure any one injury (including death) that has been suffered by a player in his team"

Has there been an official ruling on this?

That line regarding at any one point simply means that you can use the apothcary at any time of the match, ie for kickoff inj, failed dodes in your turn, block results in your opponents turn. It doesn't mean you can apoth someone later in the game if the inj was caused earlier. It must be done right after hte dice have rolled before anything else happens.

Yep, I agree that makes total sense, and reading the two sections together certainly would lead you to draw this conclusion, but it is still misleading (and or confusing) I would say.

I played in a 3ed league awhile ago where most of the players interpreted the "at any time" clause as being able to save apoth until after the game to heal whoever they wanted. I pointed out the whole must be left face up on the pitch after healed, but they kept on arguing against that. It's not that they truely believed that there interpretation was right, it was just a way of rationalizing their cheating. There are many players who try to interpret the rules to favour themselves and 'tis a sad thing.

Another example of the badly worded rules. It makes perfect sense if you've read the previous section and this line together.

In our old league we played that the apothecary could be saved and used at any point in the game.

Re-read the rules this time and this didn't look right at all but the wording is just ambiguous enough that I thought it would be worth getting an opinion on.

If you want to reconcile it with the fluff then just think of the dead player, if he's going to be saved the apothecary better do it NOW. He's a medic not a necromancer :wink:

But if the Princess Bride has taught us nothing else, its that there is a big difference between mostly dead and all dead :wink:

I used to play it that you could use the apothecary at any time, since I thought it was a fair trade off to not have a crucial player available for the rest of the drive/game if you used the apothecary at a later stage.
