If I am hypnotised, take an action, roll a 1 - Am I still hypnotised? I have taken an action, it was just to stand in place and roar lots.

(I think):
No your're not. After taking an action, the HG is gone and it doesn't matter if you're allowed to take the action or not.

I don't have the rulebook in front of me - but I think the HG rule states something along the lines of "until the gazed player declares an action" -- not "performs an action."
If you were gazed, you could declare a movement action but not move any squares just to gain tackle zones again.

It says "until the start of his next action". That suggests to me that you declare an action, remove Hypno, roll for the negatrait and apply it, then complete the action where possible.

This just came up in my league. We all agreed with the above to save time in the middle of the game, but set it aside to look at later.
From Player Actions page 7:
You must declare which Action a player is going to take before carrying out the Action.
From Hypnotic Gaze page 65:
the opposing player loses his tackle zones . . . until the start of his next Action or the drive ends.
From Wild Animal page 68:
immediately after declaring an Action with a Wild Animal, roll . . . the Action is wasted.
I think everyone agrees players are gazed until they start their Action.
1. The declaration is not part of the Action.
2. In every game I've played "immediately" means before anything that would otherwise follow. I. e. the Wild Animal roll occurs between the declaration and the Action.
3. I would think a "wasted" Action does not "start."
Since, I reached the wrong conclusion on reading the wording, which of the three lines is wrong?

I think the issue is with your interpretation of when the Wild Animal roll is taking place. For all groups I have ever been playing in, the roll for WA is the start of the action; not between the declaration and action, therefore the Hypnotic Gaze goes i.e. you are correct that the roll is immediately after the declaration but it does not happen before the action, it is the start of the action.
If it helps the 'declare the action' for Wild Animal is stop people going "I'm using the Mino" rolling WA and failing to say if they are risking losing their Blitz.

I'd say the first. Declaring the action is starting the action. I'd also say that there is some interpretation on "carrying out the action" as you quoted from page 7: carrying out may mean
completing as opposed to
starting.
Normally you would declare then roll WA (as per the WA quote: "
immediately after declaring an Action with a Wild Animal, roll..."). HG is removed at the start of the action, so you would declare (thereby starting the action) and HG is then considered removed before you move on to WA, and then you carry out (complete) the action.
