Intercepting a handoff

This came up in yesterday's game: is it possible to intercept a handoff?
We decided it isn't so, since 'Intercepts' refere to passes, and a Handoff is distinctly not a pass, but I remember a discussion (either here or on BBT, or in lala land
) wherein it was determined that is is allowed.
The handoff would have to be diagonal in any case, since that's the only way the would-be interceptor, standing next to both opponents can be 'closer to the thrower than the catcher is, and closer to the catcher than the thrower'.
So, am I tripping again, or is this indeed legalized?
