Taking Root and Standing Up

Quick question about the interaction between Take Root and attempting to stand back up.
If I have a treeman that has been knocked down and he attempts to stand up (via a move action), he has to roll to Take Root. What happens if he fails this roll but does not succeed in standing back up? Is he "rooted" even though is is still prone? Can he still attempt to stand in future turns? Does failing a root roll while attempting to stand negate any successful roll for standing up and trap the player on the ground?
Thanks.
