Skills for team development

Post by BigD »

Okay, this has come up due to a difference in understanding of team development.

Lets say I've a lizardman team with the skills available to the players being:

Saurus Strength, General
Skink Agility
Kroxigor Strength, General

Simple so far. Now I've rolled Doubles for the skills roll for a Skink. My understanding from the LRB on Page 40 says:

Rolling Doubles
Normally a player is only allowed to choose a skill from the categories listed on the Player Skill List. However, if the Star Player roll was a double (ie, 1,1 or 2,2, etc), the the coach may ignore the result rolled on the Star Player Roll table (even if it was a characteristic increase) and instead may take any skill they like for the player. The restrictions for the player's race and the position he plays are ignored in this case, so a Human Catcher could take a Strength skill, for example. Only Chaos and Skaven players may take a physical ability.

According to this and having just checked the reference sheet the ONLY skills available to a Skink assuming they roll a double come from General, Strength and Agility. Is this correct?

Heres the link to the Games Workshop Reference for BloodBowl. On page 3 it has the skills listed available to each team.

Thanks in advance

Your skink can on a double choose between general, passing, agility and strenght skills + he can take agility trait.

As you said BigD the restrictions for race and position are ignored, so he can choose from any of the skill groups or a trait from their allowed groups. So what the other guys said is right. It doesn't restrict you to the skill groups that your race is normally allowed like you thought. Hope that clears stuff up. Though mostly the general skills are more useful to skinks than the passing ones ;]

I agree but then that implies that Skinks could take 'Physical' skills as well? Or why can ONLY Skaven and Chaos take Physical Skills then? Thats the big question isn't it?

Because they're not Physical skills, they're Physical TRAITS. So no one can take a physical trait on a regular roll (except for some exceptions with the non-official teams), and only those with access to the category can take them if they roll a double.

Thanks guys. I agree. But I wanted to get other peoples impressions. The reason I asked is one league I'm in told me NO I couldn't take one particular skill as it wasn't available to the team. But I'll be mentioning it to them later and hopefully updating two teams which haven't played another game since the update. Suits me fine.

Sounds like that league was playing too much Mordheim, which is structured that way.

Actually, the beauty of making the mutations traits and then allowing only Skaven and Chaos access to the Physical Abilities "skill group" was one of the things that really appealed to us (well, me, at least) about the latest revision of the skills/traits split. It allows us to include the mutations and restrict them to only those two races without needing any extra ruleage.

Even without the specific wording denying other races access to Physical Abilities, they still can't take them, just based on the normal skill restrictions.

Too bad the skinks have a ST2, which doesnt allow them to take MightyBlow. Could you imagine a skink runjning around with mightblow??!! That would be scary!!!
