New Skills?

Inspired by the whole Fouling discussion over in the Tactics forum, and the talk of players specialising in fouling (Roy Keane :pissed: springs to mind , I got to thinking (slow day at work. Lovely for a friday!)

Remember: these are just ideas, and I by no means claim that they're any good!

Lets have a new Skill category "Fouling Skills". Dirty Player goes into this category, along with the following:

Sneaky Git - Fouls committed by this player may be declared "Sneaky". While the ref still has a chance to spot the foul on a 6, the foul will not be affected by IGMEOY - in other words it will always be at 6+ for the ref to spot. In addition, such a foul will not attract the eye. However, the foul cannot be assisted by either side, and the dirty player skill may not be used on the foul.

Gift of the Gab - The player must be on the field to use this skill. The player may, once per half, Argue the call in the same way as the head coach, but will not be sent off if he fails. He may also subtract two from any Secret weapon penalty rolls his team make.

Spike! - the player may, once per game, commit a Spike, as per the old Dirty Trick card.

Fouling is a highly specialised art, and so fouling skills are available to all players, but only on doubles rolls.

One other skill I came up with, which has real intriguing possibilities tactically if we can sort out the turnover implications:

Cut Block (General skill) - The player is adept at taking out opposing players knees from under them in a block. This means, while the player himself spends a considerable amount of time on the ground, his opponents have a much better chance of being knocked down.

This skill neutralises the effects of the block skill. The both down result may not be avoided using the block skill if one of the players involved declares a cutblock. All players involved in the block are knocked down and must make armour rolls to avoid injury.

there must be a choice to do:
does the Foul action take a big expansion and so, try to get that kind of rules .
Or as GW try to do it, foul is an action but not so big and forget about this but find easier rules (with less rules to manage this).

It is a choice but each choice means work to do.

While the idea of the cutblow skill is interestin, the usage of it seems less so.
Using the SPP on a skill that, when used, will put you on the ground (makeing you a target for Fouls) and make you take an armour roll, just doesnt seem usefull teambuilding wise.
But by all means throw in some arguments in order to change my maind ;)

Cutblock sounds AWESOME!! Who cares about the armor roll. Dwarves have a 9...that's fine with me! hehehehe

Look at Piling On, Piep. You end up on the ground too (albeit with no armor roll) but it's worth it. Combined with MB it's pure murder. I had 17 KILLS(!!) in 15 games with that combo. hehehehe With real experienced teams, the Block skill becomes a given cuz EVERYONE has it. Having a way around the Block skill is a great idea.

(Anyone miss the "good ole days", where you had Block levels and could knock a Blocker down if you were a BETTER Blocker?? *sighs*)

I think Sneaky Player might work better as the fouling equivalent of the Guard skill. In other words, a player is not allowed to lend an assist to a foul if he's in an opposing player's TZ unless he has the Sneaky Player skill. If he has that skill, he simply waits for the opponent to get distracted before helping out.

Heck, I still think that Dirty Player should be able to do Guard assists to fouling ... forget new skill.

Let's face it, I have 106 teams in the MBBL and MBBL2 ... how many players with Dirty Player ... ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! out of about 1,200 players.

So for all the fear of DP ... me I'd be PERFECTLY happily with the current fouling system and giving DP the Guard ability for fouling.

Priceless!!!!!!!!!

Skill might need some fine tuning but i love the idea. Perhaps he can use this skill on behalf of other players to as well as himself. perhaps the drawback could be on a roll of 1 The ref gets "p****d off and downs the player with a left hook ( 3 dice block )??? :P :P :D

I'd say that this is far more likely to be a function of the time it takes to develop players in PBEM. I'd expect most people are more likely to turn linemen into DPs than their position players, because a DP is likely to be a target and the position players will have other jobs to do. It's also quite possible that the DPs first skill will be something to protect them (say Block or Dodge). Certainly my Tomb Raiders' skeleton will probably get DP as his second skill, but I'm waiting for him to get enough SPPs to get there.

Give us time Galak and you'll get the DPs! :D

Are you SERIOUS, Galak? 1 Dirty boy out of 1200 players??? That's a disgrace! Is this an all-Elf league or something? :D Or Bretonnian? hehe

Wow, that's unfathomable to me. There's only 20 in my league, but I think just about every team has at least one Dirty man. I myself carry 2...for those especially tough nuts to crack. Namely Big Guys. Ogres are so common these days and the easiest way to get that big freak off the pitch is to gang him with a Dirty and a few others. Even if you only stun him. He'll still be down for the next round of Ogre Stomp.

My personal nemesis are Treemen...they are just BEGGING for a dirty. I don't usually foul a lot (cuz Dwarves are more useful on the pitch as opposed to serving a match penalty) but when I need someone removed from play, I always sprint that Dirty Boy over for the fun. Martyn's quite right about it being a lineman...no big loss if he's tossed, but the rewards are worth a little rule-bending.

Well as long as i'm not unlucky enough to roll a double or a stat increase :D

Then the one of the first skills i'll take for my hobgoblins is Dirty Player.

The ability to take out the oppositions best player cannot be ignored.

Personally, I think that having a new skill category is a bit excessive - for a player to develop in the art of dirty playing, he must roll consecutive doubles for his skill rolls.

Why not put it so that when a player chooses his first skill from the Dirty category, he also gains access to that category, so he can take more skills from the dirty category without rolling doubles.

Just a thought.

Personally, Deth, I find it a bit sacreligious (sp?) for a Hobgoblin coach to quote from a Dwarven text, but... :D

And that's a superior idea, Mestari. Making DP a gateway to more nastiness is a perfect idea. It would give Dirty boys a more tangible character boost than just what the coach can say about him. I like it.

My Hobgoblins work as slaves to my Chaos Dwarf team, who exploit the green fellows to their bidding. :P

Plus forgot to mention Durin Rockflame is a Chaos Dwarf.

*washes his hands at the thought*

Ugh! :puke: That's even WORSE! I think GW shoulda erased the Chaos Dwarf from their idea book before they brought them to life. What a travesty. :) Those hats drive me insane...and the beards, and the teeth, and the poses, and teaming up with any form of Gobbo, and.....and....and.... :D

But it's ok...you can't have light with darkness. Give your worst HobGob a kick for me, will ya? hahaha
