Blood Bowl general tactics

Post by Babs »

Believe it or not, there's a lot of general Blood Bowl advice you can give to any team.

If you're interested - a long time ago back in the mists of time I wrote an article about it.

http://www.geocities.com/blood-bowl/basics.htm

There's also specific advice for teams, including tactics pages for all of your teams (except humans) at my website:

h bit late to thread but my sage advice is to study what your opponent is doing.

Obviouse point but how they react to dropped ball, weird set ups, killed players, lucky dice will give lots way. In my league bit easy because we play each other again and again, but if you can predict your oppenents move based on his playing style then you can win with this information

I quite often find that my opponent favours one side of the pitch over the other, make sure you attack his weakest side.

As for actual setups, depends on:

Opponents team: Race, Players, Skills, Style of play
Your team: Race, Players, Skills, Style of play
Game situation: Ie. do you need to score fast, are you playing catchup, maybe your in the lead and just need to hold the ball for a few turns.

Kick is a highly underrated skill by many blood bowl coaches.

Yeah!

There´s no better combination than "KICK" with a BLITZ when you´re playing Skaven. I´ve won a game with 8 : 0 against a (poor performancing) human team. But be sure to have one or two gutterrunner in the near of the los.

But where to Kick to? I always take the Kick skill, but rarely seem to do quite enough to stop my opponent progressing as he wants.

The good thing about Kick is that the ball only scatters D3 squares, rounding down. Seems strange, I know, but it's there in the book. This means you can place the ball 2 squares away from the back corner and stand a pretty good chance of keeping it in bounds. In fact, you have a 155/192 or 81% chance of avoiding a touchback. Them's good odds. Place the kick 3 squares off the corner, and you are almost certainly safe. 367/384 or 96% safe, in fact.

Most offensive set-ups are weighted heavily to one side of the pitch. Use Kick to get the ball on the other side. This can be really disruptive, especially your opponent may have left gaps in his line on that side for you to pour through.

Other than that, there are two basic tactics with the Kick skill.

1. Kick long. Try to cut the opposing team in two - getting your players inbetween his proto-cage and the ball-grabbers. Your opponent can counter this by forming his cage deeper in his own half - but what's wrong with that! :D More useful against slow teams.

2. Kick short. Try to get your players in and around the ball and proto-cage as early as possible. More useful against fast teams.

I don't think you factored Bad kick into this but the numbers are close enough. Kick is a really great skill for every team.[/quote]

Where to kick is quite difficult IMO. A lot depends on the state of the game and the relative strengths of the two teams.

Late in a half I'll almost always kick long to make my opponent move the ball further.

If my opponent can move the ball easily then I'll tend to kick short. If I'm fast and/or or they can't pass the ball reliably then kick long.

One other thing - kick gives you a choice of squares where the ball lands - as you decide to use kick after the ball is placed - which is more useful than you might think (and almost always prevents your opponent getting a free catch roll).

Before the game eat loads and loads of beans, hard boiled eggs, frozen burritos, onions, salsa, and chili.
Then close all the windows and feed the dog some chili.

If that doesn't distract your opponent, then nothing will.

ooops  No, "Bad Kick" not included in the figures. Though it's probably best to keep that separate, as you tend not to worry about getting that KO result when you place the ball.

I just don't remember what this thread's topic was anymore! :o

Anyway:

Kick is a must have skill for any team going for glory! The skill gives you one of the most important things a team can have: control.

Regarding defensive formations, a quick tip: If the other team is fast, stand your players deep and keep someone strong free to blitz back.
If it is not, you can position your players near the Los and try to steal the ball in the early turns.
As usual, positioning depends on your strenghts, weaknesses and your opponent's team.

It's important to have an overall strategy in mind for each game. How are you planning to win? Attrition? Fast scoring? Da Cage and time control?
Your strategy will help you decide what to do when there's no obvious move to make.

Good luck.
