Oh man.. I really need to learn how to play offensively...
80% of the time I get a touchback I fumble up and lose the ball. I hate them!
Also, whenever I'm kicking and roll a perfect defence, I regularly find myself in a highly sucky position.
Maybe I should just start to stop trying to take benefit of these "opportunities" and play as if they hadn't occured.. Or maybe I just need some tactical suggestions to these events.
I actually consider myself a fair coach but I just can't seem to get a hang of touchbacks and perfect defences... Anyone else have this problem or am I a freak?
Perfect defence.
What can I say just deploy heavier where it looks like the opponent is going( I rarely do this as my set up is perfect )
Touchbacks. Simple just give it to the guy who is deep and was going to retrieve the ball anyway(If your that stuck)
But as I hardly roll perfect defence or get touchbacks I shouldn't comment

If you get in trouble with your perfect defence, why don't you stay where you are? Too many changes sometimes leave you in a position you would never think off when putting your players on the field.
Worst case is doing some things to avoid the sure death of one player in your front line . Yes, we all know he would have been dead otherwise. No other possibilities left. If you leave him, the result is more than once a simple push. If you "save his live", you most of the time open up holes you don't notice until your opponent demonstrates it...
So I try some mineor shifts only, which usually doesn't really affect the game.
But why are you fumbling your touchback? What do you do with the ball??
The whole point of my question was to see if anyone does anything constructive in these situations.. What I do is trying to do contructive stuff, which most often fails horribly
I know I _should_ stay conservative and stick with the original plan. My original plan tends to be "stick the ball onto one of the back-players and stay away from the opponents until they do a mistake" so it's rather boring..

Me too. Just sit and wait for the other guy to make a mistake and until he does PULP HIS TEAM

On perfect defense, just try to minimize any st/guard differences your opponent creates, if his big guy is in front of a lone guard instead of your big guy/good hitter, move just them. Or if he sets up oddly (off to one side), likewise defend with that in mind. Most of the time tho, stay the course. As for touchback, always give the ball to either a) the passer for the 1spp, or b) the guy with low ag but the skills to keep the ball. On choice b, any blodgy guy or a high st with block are good choices.

I'm really still pretty much a newbie coach, and this is my first post/reply;
On the subject of Perfect Defense, when I set up I usually have my wings 3 squares back to allow for a Quick Snap, so all I'll usually do is move these guys one square forward, two if they're not lining up against anyone. My first few games I found I'd move far too many players into weird positions, usually failing to leave anyone deep in my half - in most cases a big mistake.
I think he means instead of giving the ball, on a touchback, to the guy who was back to receive anyway, he gives it to one of this guys upfront immediately.
In terms of perfect defense, you can A) Not worry about Quick Snap, so your guys can move a square or two forward if they were set up back, only for that reason and B) You can put more guys on the line if you want, since your opponent has already set up.
Most of the time I find that I only want to put 3 guys on the line, because otherwise, since the offense sets up after they see where I am, no matter how many people I put there, they can get 2 dice blocks on almost all of them by "blocking down the line". Most offensive setups tend to setup so on the first turn, they can get 2 dice blocks on all 3 men you put on the LOS, so if you roll a perfect defense, you get the chance to change that. Personally, I would say that if he only has a couple guys on the LOS, move your 3 guys into relative safety (where they only face a 1-dice block, or sometimes even no block at all), or if he stacked the line you could match up with him one-on-one with your guys, thus forcing the choice on them to take a lot of risky 1-dice blocks, or to dodge off the line if they want to advance.
Also, you know where his players are, so you can match up better. You know where his gutter runner or catcher is lined up, so you can match up with him withan appropriate "cornerback". Also, you can move blitzers up to the line against his blitzers... personally I don't normally put my blitzers on the line, because they wind up getting a 2-dice block against them anyway, and if it's by a lineman, it doesn't help so much anyway (because even though you fall down on a double-down, it's a turnover anyway). If you move him up after you know where the offense has set up though, you can match him up so that he can take a one-on-one block against your opponent's blitzer.
Anyway... that's all for now, off the top of my head. =)
