Realistic Goals for Wood Elfs
I just started a 18 game season with a wood elf team where all the teams started tr 100. As it stands there is a skaven team that got 18 spp's in the first game vs orcs... he rolled doubles for his gutter runner... brutal... long legs already and his rat ogre got block. ug.
So how aggressively should I play my wood elves? I play vs humans my first game. I don't think he has a ogre yet so we are on even strength. I'm more than a bit worried about getting taken out. I'm starting the standard lineup. 10 line elfs and a WD. Should I hang my WD out to dry and leap in trying to knock the ball loose or should I just try and make my opponent score fast by harrssing him from behind? I feel confident I can push him around when I recieve then score at will but when he gets the ball he tend to slow things down (not due to skill).
My main goal is spp's but I wouldn't mind winning, but not at the cost of losing guys.
Thoughts?

Don't get too up in his face in the first game. Sit back and try to turn it into a scorefest. Wait until you get your apothecary before you start leaping your Wardancer into trouble to pop the ball free.
After that, try to score with Wardancers on defence and regular lineman on offence. With their movement and agility, it should not be too difficult, and you will notice they stay on the field a lot longer with block and/or dodge.
You'll need a kicker too.

Running and hide till I have apoth.. sounds good to me.
I don't actually expect all the teams to make it through to the end. There are 4 of us playing each other team 3 games. My other team is undead who have been performing very well lately on the cas department. First game I got block on 2 of the ghouls and they play the skaven next. Time to deal some pain.
I'll try and turn the first WE game in a scoring shootout and deal with humans later on with the undead.

I strongly disagree with the "run and hide" tactic. Why? That's simple:
if you run away "defensively" (i.e. not to score and therefore put pressure on your opponent, but let him do whatever he wants instead), you give away ground to your opponent. That means that he can safely get hold of the ball, then corner your players and beat them to a pulp.
I can guarantee that result - this is how I used to play, and how I used to see my wood elven teams vanish one after the other.
My advice? As said above score, score and score. The only "defensive" approach is with your WD - I agree that you'd better not leap around with him until you buy yourself an apothecary (which should definitely be your FIRST purchase).

in some ways its easy - look on other side of coin...
every team bar stunty is stronger than wood elf, with more av, more block, more guard and less mobility. The key to beating them is to pulp them, and nulify the expensive star players. If team is 9 linemen and 2 120k players- remove expense from pitch and they are a 800k team left; follow so far.
So thus "score score score" is the only way out of this problem. Give rival no chance on the ball and throw everything into stealing ball every turn. Put 2-0 in and all of a sudden players cant concentrate on killing you and controlling the game.
I agree "score score score" is the WE moto.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The game ended 2-2. I basically stayed out of trouble. I harrassed open players by surrounding them to prompt my opponent to score faster. Otherwise dodged out and moved my guys behind his cage to push him foward for the score. Overall a decient game. I lost my WD for a game. Couldn't be helped. I didn't hang him out to dry. Just had a bit of misfortune. I got my opponent back by killing a thrower and a blitzer. Justice and then some. I had some really untimely 1's that game. Out of 4 pass attempts I missed 2. Even so I skilled up 2 players and no serious injury or death so I'm happy.
