In my league we soon realised back in 3ed that if allowed then all coaches would soon have four morg'n'thorgs. So I came up with an auction system that allowed all starplayers to be used.
1. Since stars are unique, they cannot be bought several times or by several teams, ie, there was only ONE Griff on the league.
2. Morg could play in ANY team, since there would only be one morg around.
4. A player which would play for a certain team gave that team's coach right of preference above all other teams' coaches to which the player could not normally play to.
5. Every coach gave me a list of their prefered stars.
6. The auction beggan, starting with the most desired players, followed by the most expensive players left.
This made an interesting mix of races and teams since it made possible for a dark elven team to have the minotaur per example. Every coach wanted Morg so what happened was that he was sold by 250k gold crowns to the humans, since everybody could bid for morg. The vampire was also interesting because the human and undead coaches both tried to buy him. Several other coaches wanted to bid for him too, but the humans and undead had right of preference because those are the teams the vampire normally plays for.
I guess those examples demonstrate how it all worked and it allowed many stars that would normally never play to enter the field for different teams.
Next season I'm going to triple the price of the players. It will make them so expensive that no one will hire them as they might get killed and a 540k gold crown Griff is not something to get easilly bought and will increase your teams team rating so drastically that you will be handicaped for sure. Tell me what you think about it!

After a full length beating, one must think that no matter how miserable you are, an uncertain life is better than a certain death!

I made the price triple so to disencourage people of buying them, super players in real football are also too expensive in comparison to their real value. This is to avoid a super player league, of course coaches didn't have to pay fees to play with the stars. You either spend a ton of money on a star that can die on the field but makes spectacular moves or you train normal players to become good or even stars. Stars unbalance the game but in this way they would certainly unbalance the team rating as well, thus giving you a lot of problems and not just their super moves.

Coach Barry, you might want to look at the WargamerAU Blood Bowl League auction system www.wargamerau.com
It's quite an interesting idea. Each coach in the league (which will cover all of Australia!) nominates two Star Players from the list. Nominated players go into the Auction. If a player gets multiple nominations (e.g. five different coaches nominate Griff Oberwald), the extra nominations will be wasted. This will tend to restrict the number of star players available. No other allies are allowed, so the number of Big Guys and other power players will be severely restricted. Star Players that die stay dead, further restricting their availability.
Each SP's opening bid is their "book price" - Griff Oberwald will cost at least 180,000 - and probably a lot more!
Each coach gets 1,200,000 to start his team, to encourage bidding wars. Also, each Star Player gets an increased list of teams he can play for - also to encourage competition for these players.
At the end of the season, for each player with >30 SPPs roll a die: on a 6, he decides to go into the star players market, and you must either pay to retain him or let him go into the auction and get half his cost back.
It looks good. I think there'll be a lot of strategy involved in the bidding. You can bid on players you can't use, just to drive up the price (or in hopes of selling them later). With 1.2 M gold to work with, it may even be worth not bidding on SPs, but taking more "position" players, and a couple of extra linemen to soak up casualties as your team develops. On the other hand, in a low-SP environment, one good SP could be devastating.
