Brutal team for brutal tournament

Post by Ancalagon »

Hi to all!
This is the second year I'm going to take part into one of the foolish tournament ever done. Last year we were 32 coaches. They use 3rd edition rules just as they are written into the book plus norse, amazon and lizardmen an old FAQ from WD. In this tournament they allow up to 4 repeated starplayers; norse and amazon use human starplayers and lizardmen use that old combo of sookitomi, silibili and another whose name I don't remember. Last year I used one lizardmen team and arrived to quarters. One friend won using a norse team I suggested as winner composed by 2 zugs, 1 morg, luthor and rest of the team lineman. This year my mind has changed and think that those kind of tournaments are just for fun and playing with the worst (better) and bloodiest team you can build, so I'm going to try this:
Undead
3 luthor
2 mummis
6 zombies
1 RR
1 FF
The rerroll will be used just to avoid turnovers due wrong blocks with mummies. Of course the first skill to be choosen (excep for mummies) will be dirty play.
What do you think about?
-please, don't talk or argue about the tournament rules, I know are wrong and I'm not commish to change them, although I'm trying to convince the comish about the use of LRB next time-

I'd suggest more players (12 to start at least) so that you can survive the inevitable sending offs and casualties.

So drop one of the Luthors and buy a pair of wights. Shouldn't make the team less tough, and increases its durability.

I tested different combos one of them was that one you said and the result wasn't as satisfactory as having 3 luthors. I've tried against competent teams and players of woodies, DE, norse (same team on the first post), human, dwarf (a team with 2 grims and 2 trollslayers) and ork. I've choosen this team because I can buy quite easy zombies or skeletons from first match and can raise them too. In fact, another of the reasons of choosing 3 luthors is the chances this player gives, although being outnumbered against hard teams. The result is this team of 5 st 5 players and 3 ag4 players wich is able to do passing game or hitting game.
-please, don't thing I don't keep in mind your advice, I'm just trying to find things that could escape to my mind-.

Since you seem fixed on 5 S5 then you can't make any changes.

What are you willing to drop?

More than drop I would like to know possible situations or teams that can hurt me.

As I see it, your main weakness is speed.

The mummies are used for beating down the opposing line and your zombies cani pretty much only be used to exert tackle zones and fouling.

This means your 3 luthors have to do everything else (throw, catch and pick up the ball). Sure they are great at this and getting the ball from him will be very hard indeed.

However on defence you haven't really got any players who excel at getting the ball from the opposing player as many teams can outrun you. 3 players with move 6 and the rest with 4 and 3 is too slow for me personally. (of course this depends on the opposing teams, but a wood elf team would have no trouble scoring every time they receive the ball).

I would either sacrifice one Luthor for two wights or instead field a human team mixing Luthor with Griff (perhaps Zug). This gives you more speed - of course at the cost of hitting power.

mmm good point. In matches I played against elf teams although they received first and scored fast, I received next and meanwhile they suffered some casualties wich helped me. I don't want to drop mummies or luthors but maybe I can change two zombies by 2 skeletons to gain 1 extra mo. point. On defence against elves I usually put two of my luthors behind and try to get the ball with the other one infiltrating him into op. part of the pitch, I do this only if he tries to keep the ball to do a Handoff/pass/score next turn, if he comes to my half on first turn I just hit the ball carrier.

Playing against you I'd follow one of 4 strategies

1) Remove Luthors - once they are out of the game you've got no speed or agility so it shouldn't be too hard to out score you and avoid too many casualties. To do this I need tackle and strength.

2) Remove zombies - you really lack numbers so knocking out a few zombies is going to leave you badly exposed. I can just do this with blockers capable of causing injuries and a DP or two.

3) Frustrate - its possible slow this team right down and stop it scoring. Gaze helps prevent this, but could easily leave you with an isolated ball carrier. Easiest to do with lots of dodgers as you lack tackle and those mummies are going to take a few games to get block.

4) Luck - 1 reroll doesn't leave you too much scope for failure. I'd try to make you burn it asap leaving blocks for your zombies or mummies if I have av 9. Once its gone your options drop off really quickly and you are very vulnerable to turnovers. Just about anyone can do this but Dwarves & Orcs are probably best.

Hi again!
Finally I played with the team I said (4 luthors, 2 mummis, 4 zombies, 2 skeletons). And the tournament has been won by one team like mine, in fact teams at the final were nearly twins.
I lost 1-1 against one chaos team with 2 lord boraks who had a lot of luck with it's cards.
I hate 3rd.
