It all depends on how 'stuck in' you're willing to let your team get. If you don't normally score in two-three turns, go for guard. If you play to avoid blocks and race for the TD, go for the +1 MA.
I've found the score fast/sack fast mentality to be the only way Elves can keep from being slaughtered.
