How to beat Amazons early on???

Post by Rupert »

Hi

I play in a conference league and one of the other teams in my conference is amazons. The play off spots will be decided after just 6 games and the amazons won their first game convincingly. I am facing the Amazons next with my High Elfs and I have problems comming up with a good game plan. I have almost no skills to counter all the dodge (and BloDge!) players - I cannot block the amazons with out great risk, I can barley out pace them, and they have more players and more re-rolls than me. What to do :(
After two games my team have 11 players: 8 line elfs, one Dragon, and 2 Lions, one apo and 2 RR's (odd starting Cockerel, I know, but I wanted some scoring ability from the start!). One line elf got block, one Lion got an ag increase, and the other Lion have dodge.
I dont know how many skills the amazons will have (they have not finished their 2. game yet) but I think they will have 3-5 skills (already one of their line women have guard). I think the amazons are bettr at almost everything and I do not see that I can take advantage of their low armour cause getting into a blocking war against them will be more dangorous to me than to them. Any advice are welcome :puke:

The way I see it, the only thing you've got over them is movement and agility. If you want to win, you're going to have to play this game like you are Skaven.

On offence, send out your Lion Warriors and keep your 5 ag ball handler back from the line. Try to Blitz his coverage off and get the ball downfield either through a handoff - pass or a long throw with your good agility. Remember that even though he has dodge on just about everyone, they all have 3 agility. Don't be afraid to put your linemen on all his players who have movement to hit your ballcarrier and force him to dodge to hit you downfield if it comes to it.

Defense is the tough part for you, as he is going to try to get his blodge blitzers the ball and put the hurt on. Take as many 2 die blocks as you can, but don't follow up. Hopefully his low armor will bite him once or twice. Try to save your rerolls for hits on the ball carrier, and make a point of hitting him every turn with both of your block players, if possible. You need to rub out his skill players, so mark his catchers and throwers as your main targets.

Good luck. It's a tough matchup early on for you.

Do all blocks last if possible and assuming the opposing Amazon doesn't have block, don't be afraid to take a Both Down result instead of a pushback, that AV7 will break eventually :)

Yeah, AV 7 is very crunchy.

My Norse team just suffered from 10 CAS (3 deaths) against an Ork team, and I had about 45 higher TR than him! :puke:

Just keep pounding them, and they'll wilt (even the Blodgers.) Just remember to hit the one with Guard first if they start them on the line (and at every other opportunity.)

You also have 3 players faster than any of his which will be very handy both on offense and defense.

I played amazons in two leagues and my opponents (the high AG teams and fast teams) always did is running.
Play the match like skaven would do.

Use your better MA and your better AG in offence and defence

Don't follow up your blocks, if you follow up it will hurt you
Try to get the guard linewoman out of the match early on.
Keep your RR, for some hits on the blodge ball carriers.

Thanks - I was realy with out ideas but it seems I have a few options after all. To summarize:

1) play like skaven to take advantage of the slight speed advantage. Well, I will try but I dont know much about skaven. I guess you mean a running/short passing game?

2) block, but dont follow up. I can do that :-?

3) get the guard line woman.

4) take the both down result instead of push.
